Just recently, one of our collection vehicles caught fire whilst out on a recycling collection round. 🚛🔥 Whilst the exact cause remains under investigation, it is likely that a v**e or lithium battery incorrectly placed in a recycling bin was responsible! 😠
Thankfully, nobody was injured, but the incident delayed collections, damaged the vehicle and put our crew in a dangerous situation whilst the fire was brought under control.
Sadly, incidents like this are becoming increasingly common across the waste and recycling industry. At our facilities, our teams regularly remove v**es and batteries from recycling loads by hand before they reach processing equipment.
Lithium batteries are found in many everyday items, including v**es, phones, toys, power tools and small electricals. When damaged or crushed during collection or processing, these batteries can rapidly overheat and ignite.
Inside a collection vehicle or recycling facility, fires can spread quickly through combustible materials such as paper, cardboard and plastics, putting drivers, operatives, vehicles and infrastructure at risk. ⚠️
Vapes, batteries and small electrical items should never be placed in your recycling or general waste bin. Instead, they should be taken to a designated battery or electrical recycling point where they can be handled safely.
