LIVESTOCK MARKET REPORT
TUESDAY 16TH JUNE 2026
Forward: 533 Sheep comprising 320 Spring Lambs, 76 Prime Hoggs, 137 Cast Ewes and Rams,
🐑 SPRING LAMBS 🐑
Prime lamb numbers continue to flock through the gates at Hawes, matched with another strong trade. Despite the market easing slightly this week, many vendors of handy-weight lambs are still trading in the region of £40 up on the same week last year. The trade may have eased slightly, but there is certainly no need for anyone to feel sheepish about this week's returns. There was a pleasing overall market average of 430p/kg, well in line with other centres.
Quality heavy-weight lambs continue to trade in excess of the £200 mark, with buyers showing plenty of appetite for quality. The top price this week of £250 was achieved by the Gregg Family of Masham with a 54kg Beltex lamb, purchased by C Steadman Butchers, Kirkby Stephen. MW & HE Pedley, Little Musgrave were next up, selling 49kg Beltex lambs to £224.
The consignment from JR & LA Capstick, Killington peaked at £220, or 478p/kg, with Beltex lambs purchased by Hammonds Butchers, Bainbridge. Other lambs from the same home sold to £219 and £210 twice.
Heavy-weight Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £220 from R & R Gornall, Dent, proving that heavy lambs continue to pull their weight in the marketplace. Bleu du Maine lambs sold to a top of £200 from K & J Stables, Esh Village.
There were a few upland lambs forward once again, with a pen full of 34kg Mule pet lambs selling to £132 from WC Porter & Son, Reeth, while Swaledale lambs sold to £125 at 37kg from JC White, Lunedale. The upland lambs were certainly not left out in the cold, attracting keen bidding from buyers around the ring.
We would like to thank all our buyers for their continued support around the ring at Hawes Auction Mart. A particular thank you goes to our butcher buyers who this week has been – Hammonds Butchers of Bainbridge, C Steadman Butchers of Kirkby Stephen, and Martin and Sally Hare of Lane End Farm Shop. Their continued support for Hawes Auction Mart provides a valuable outlet for quality local produce and helps return strong prices for our vendors.
