A wonderful portrait consigned for our upcoming Collectors’ Auction, a mid-19th century depiction of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, painted in the manner of John Lucas.

Shown standing in military uniform and wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, the portrait likely depicts Wellington during his time as Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. The order itself was awarded to him in 1812 following his victory at the Battle of Salamanca during the Peninsular War, later confirmed by King Ferdinand VII of Spain.

Painted circa 1840, this atmospheric work reflects the enduring fascination with Wellington following both his military successes and later role as Prime Minister. Alongside Sir Thomas Lawrence, John Lucas was among the artists most associated with capturing the Duke’s likeness, and this example has all the character and presence of that tradition.

With Hawick preparing for tomorrow’s 1514 concert and the continuing celebrations of Common Riding season, this remarkable piece of local history feels especially meaningful.

Coming up in Thursday’s auction is this striking engraving, ‘Return to Hawick from Hornshole, 1514’, after the work of celebrated local artist Tom Scott.

The artwork depicts the legendary return of the youths of Hawick from Hornshole in 1514, after defending the town against an English raiding party in the aftermath of the Battle of Flodden. According to tradition, the young men captured an English flag and carried it back into Hawick — an act of courage and pride that became one of the foundations of the town’s Common Riding traditions.

That is why this image remains so relevant today. The riding of the marches, the celebrations throughout Common Riding season, and tomorrow’s 1514 concert all continue to honour the spirit, history and community identity born from these events over 500 years ago.

Tom Scott’s work is renowned for bringing Borders history vividly to life, and this piece captures the pride, resilience and tradition that still define Hawick today.
