Laura Brumm was both a landscape and portrait artist. She exhibited at the Liverpool Corporation Autumn Exhibition of Modern Art at the Walker Art Gallery in 1905; with the Allied Artists’ Association at the Royal Albert Hall in 1909 and 1911, and at the Royal Academy in 1917 (no. 388 News From Home). Married to Charles Brumm (b. 1853 in Germany), the couple first lived in Southport, where Charles became president of the Birkdale Liberals and chairman of the Birkdale and County Liberal Club. With the outbreak of the First World War, however, Brumm’s husband retreated from Merseyside politics and the couple moved south with their two daughters to 12 Harley House, Regent’s Park, London. She occasionally signed her name with a single M, possibly to hide the Germanic origin of her husband. The cataloguer wonders if this Orientalist work is perhaps also a self portrait.

This charming vivacious pastel reveals a gloaming sky, with looming rocky outcrop next to a shoreline. It seems highly likely to be a view of Catterline Bay, closer study of the rocky outcrops in the bay support this location.

Catterline was the focus of many works by Eardley. She owned a small cottage in the community and loved to paint the landscape and stormy eastern coast there. It makes an interesting counterpoint to her charming studies of the Samson children and friends in Glasgow tenements.

A wonderful portrait consigned for our upcoming Collectors’ Auction, a mid-19th century depiction of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, painted in the manner of John Lucas.

Shown standing in military uniform and wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, the portrait likely depicts Wellington during his time as Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. The order itself was awarded to him in 1812 following his victory at the Battle of Salamanca during the Peninsular War, later confirmed by King Ferdinand VII of Spain.

Painted circa 1840, this atmospheric work reflects the enduring fascination with Wellington following both his military successes and later role as Prime Minister. Alongside Sir Thomas Lawrence, John Lucas was among the artists most associated with capturing the Duke’s likeness, and this example has all the character and presence of that tradition.
