Silver linings!
That’s what I feel I’ve had. The past few months have helped me to reconnect with my values, reconnect with people that I haven’t spoken to for a long time and reconnect with myself. After acceptance came a veil of peace that this was my time to make some changes and to align myself with my work more.
I’ve updated my branding for my business, I’ve reconnected with clients who I’ve worked with previously and have a great synergy with and have some really exciting pieces of work booked in over the next 6-9 months. I will be continuing with my business but with limited availability - so book early!
I also had the opportunity to apply for a job which some have said was hand written for me! It’s not very often you get a tingly feeling when you get offered an interview, but that’s exactly what I had when I got the email from Sunnyside Rural Trust inviting me to interview. Walking through the rain to the summerhouse and chatting with a member of the team felt like the most natural thing in the world. Then I met Keely Siddiqui Charlick MBE and Emma Power and we had a chat - or at least that’s how it felt! I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed and comfortable during an interview.
The next day I got the call - they wanted to offer me the role of Director of Learning & Employment! The fizzy feeling told me it was absolutely the right thing for me. Since then, I have had regular contact with them and each time cements that this role is the right one for me.
I can’t put in to words how much I’m looking forward to starting with them in a couple of weeks time. It won’t be easy, it’s a tough and busy role, but so rewarding and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in!
So for anybody out there struggling, don’t lose hope, believe in yourself and stay true to your values.
Lastly, to everybody who’s supported me in any way over the last 5/6 months, I don’t have the words to thank you all enough.

It’s taken me a long time to actually write this post. The past 5 months have been incredibly hard. Getting a role last summer that was a dream role in an amazing team seemed perfect. Then 5 / 6 months ago, any chance of extending that dream was dashed. The government in all their wisdom decided to abolish NHSE. Whether you agree with the decision or not is neither here nor there, the fact is that with that announcement began a lot of upset, frustration and anxiety for all of us. For those of us on fixed term / secondment arrangements, even more so.
Whilst being denounced as essentially useless in the press, I have also had to face a very uncertain job market - alongside the abolishment of NHSE, the ICBs have to cut staff by 50%, providers have to go back to pre covid staffing numbers, other arms length bodies are being scaled back or abolished - at a time when demand for quality healthcare is at its highest. I had always thought that after 25 years in the NHS I would be there until retirement, but this current situation put pay to that.
57 job applications submitted, most not even acknowledged, rejection after rejection has been tough. I’ve also been through a real grief cycle, feeling angry, upset, dejected, in denial - then finally acceptance.
Alongside this, I’ve contacted numerous “recruiters” and been given a bleak picture of the current landscape. I’ve contacted “recruiters” about jobs and not even had the courtesy of a response (maybe not the best business model!)
All this against a back drop of a contract ending imminently, living life as a single mum and having a massive building project going on at home (that’s another stressful story for another day!)
I want to say a massive thank you to friends and colleagues who have sent me contacts, sent me job adverts, reached out to check I’m ok and just generally been all round great people to have in your life.
To those friends who have made tea whilst I ranted and sobbed about the whole situation, who checked in daily, who popped by for a cuppa just to sit there in silence - thank you, you are literally the people who have got me through the last 5 months.
There really is light at the end of the tunnel - but that’s a story for my next post.
