I’m being absolutely flooded with AI editing and robo video tools right now.
You’ve probably seen them too.

All with the breathless - and to be fair, very slick - demos that make it look like you can dump in raw footage and get perfect content out the other side.
So I asked my editor Joseph (ex brand agency) to actually test a few properly against an edit we’d already done.

I’ve broken down exactly what worked, what didn’t, and how to actually use these tools without wrecking your output in this short video.

Short version:
They’re useful.
But they’re not ready to replace real editing - especially if your brand needs to look credible. It’s just doesn’t have any judgment or taste.

Bottom line:
Use AI to speed things up in the background only.
But don’t expect to trust it for fully automated robo editing.
It’s not even close - unless you want talking head and branded captions only.
But Descript and others like it have been able to do that for years

Here's the backbone of the questions I use that aren't leading or so open that you get fluffy answers.

Testimonial content is still the most obvious way to solid social proof into your customer experience.

But getting useful, genuine answers is not as obvious as it seems.

Take your subjects on a quest into the past and compare it to today and you'll be 90% of the way there without making them feel awkward!

What video goes where in a marketing & sales funnel?

Top of funnel video has one job:
Earn attention without selling.*
No pitching. No services. Just useful, competence-signalling content that gives people a reason to stick around.
*DISCLAIMER: This matters only for high trust 'people are the product' services like finance or B2B software that I work with. Otherwise sell hard in this stage with my blessing :)

Middle of funnel is where video does the real work.
Case studies, walkthroughs, deeper explainers.
This is where trust is proven, uncertainty drops, and sales conversations get shorter and better.

Bottom of funnel isn’t about persuasion – it’s reassurance.
Testimonials, FAQs, personalised videos.
Remove risk, reduce friction, and help people confidently say yes.

And the funnel doesn’t stop at the sale.
Onboarding, success stories, and post-results content feed trust back into the system.

This isn’t about making more video.
It’s about using the right video, at the right moment, for the right job.

Used properly, video stops being content.
It becomes infrastructure.

Depends how you treat them.
Running them together in a montage can be epic for the right sector where trust is absolutely essential. Selling a shower gel - get on TikTok and make something playful. Selling trust?

Something I’ve noticed over the last year:

short-form video is increasingly about commentary and perspective, not polished production.

For a lot of teams, that creates tension - more content is needed, but full filming days don’t scale. We’ve been responding to this by running very focused recording sessions we call Rapid Reels: one hour, multiple short clips, clean multi-camera capture, simple edits ready for branding.

It’s not a replacement for larger productions - just a practical way to generate usable short-form content when volume matters.
