On Tuesday 5th December, I will be hosting a delicious evening in Brighton to fundraise for a very special organisation.

I have had the honour and privilege of working with Conversation Over Borders for almost 2 years; they came into my life at a moment of despair and gave me a tangible way to be useful, helping me to find my purpose in this crazy world.

Storytelling for social change has become a strong foundation for the way I share my love for food and the issues closest to my heart.

Understanding the history of food, migration and people reunites us with our shared humanity, helping us to build deeper connections with the people around us and advocate for a fairer society for all.

ALL PROCEEDS from this event will go towards an exciting new project: a podcast, launching in 2024, that will use the universal joy of food to explore stories, cultures and journeys of people from across the world.

This event is going to be a special one - you can expect 4 delicious courses of food accompanied by the stories the ingredients tell.

Come and join me the some of the Conversation over Borders team - the venue is intimate and tickets are limited so get in quick to join this important evening.

I was born & raised here in the UK but I grew up celebrating my cultural events behind closed doors, with little acknowledgement for my difference. Outside the world rejoiced at Christmas, Easter & Halloween but in my house it was all about Diwali, religious events & extravagant weddings.

Come and join me for a special evening where I will guide you through those early moments with food - the language of my memories and the stories of my cultural identity.

On Thursday 23rd November, I will share what it means to grow up as a minority in this country… through stories and celebratory dishes I will share these parts of myself to allow my community to share what it means to be a Gujarati Indian born & raised in the UK.

My dad, circa 1975… before he was ours and long before he left us.

You’ll see him here carrying out the ritual of breaking a coconut, symbolising a break from the past and surrendering oneself. This ritual is often seen outside a new home, in front of a new car and in this case before a big journey.

My father was born in the Tanzania, to a Gujarati Indian family. He was born in Africa because my grand parents moved from India, he later moved from Africa to India, back to Africa and then to the UK… one place to another trying to find a place to call home. The UK was the closest he got to that, but even that didn’t come easy.

Moving from one country to another is something that many people will experience, sometimes voluntarily and at other times involuntarily. My family story is a combination of both, some of it hard to understand and accept and some of it filled with bravery and courage.

The Indian diaspora has made their homes all over the world - in the places they were taken to or in the places that they chose to move to. Their movement was so far and wide - to South East Asia, to Africa, to Europe, the UAE, to the Caribbean and North America to name just a few…

This movement resulted in an explosion of culinary evolution, where Indian people took to adapting their dishes based on the ingredients they could find. It’s a special type of cuisine, it’s a cuisine that celebrates migration and its a true honour to celebrate this theme for my next supper club.

This is a special one… where I will showcase dishes that resulted from the movement of my people - some that you know and love and others that will surprise you. Each dish will be carefully recreated & shared with stories of creativity, resilience and most of all of flavour.

Join me on 22nd September 2023 at Hoogly Tea Lodge in Brighton to explore the world through their eyes - ticket link below…

The movement of people is part of our collective history - it tells the story of the best and the worst of us and without it, we would lack the colourful diversity that makes up the world we know and love.

This is a personal one for me as migration forms part of my identity. It forms not just my story, but the story of my parents, my grandparents and my cultural heritage. This evening will celebrate the theme of migration - looking at the Indian diaspora and how that has influenced cuisine all around the world.

This special event will take you on a journey, showcasing dishes that celebrate the movement of Indian people & their ingredients. Each course will be accompanied with stories to allow you to connect with dishes that you know and some that you don’t in a more meaningful way.

Join me for this at the stunning Hoogly Tea Lodge on Friday 22nd September from 7pm - tickets priced at £40 with £5 from each booking donated to The Hummingbird Project, an incredible Brighton based organisation who are working tirelessly to improve the lives of people who migrate.

Migration forms part of who I am. It forms not just my story, but the story of my parents, my grandparents and my cultural heritage. It fuels my mission to be part of driving social change, to improve the lives of people who migrate and to be part of changing the narrative of our collective story and what a wonderful chance to to do that with the gift of food.

This special evening will take place at The Set at Cafe Rust in Brighton - an intimate evening of delicious food, stories, conversations and community. All proceeds will be donated to Jollof Cafe, a weekly community cafe which is a project of the Sussex Refugee and Migrant Self Support Group. The money raised will go directly to the Destitution Fund to help any of the members (refugees, asylum seekers and precarious migrants) who need financial support to go to the Home Office interview's, emergency hostel accommodation, emergency food etc.

The 3 course menu will feature some of my favourite Indian dishes - due to event size, this will be a set vegetarian menu and we won't be able to cater for dietary needs - so a little gluten and dairy but no meat.

A huge thanks to the team at The Set for hosting this important evening - we are beyond grateful for your support.
