We know multitasking is a myth, but does time blocking really work? 🤔

Changing gear too many times a day is probably costing you more productivity than you think.

We see it first-hand: freelancers spend a huge chunk of their working day switching between tasks. Answering emails, quoting, paperwork, project work, meetings and more. You’re essentially doing the job of several people at once, and the risk of burnout is real 😮‍💨

Everyone has their own way of managing it, but one strategy that keeps coming up is time blocking: ringfencing time to focus on one type of work. And there’s some interesting thinking behind it 🧠

Research into something called attention residue suggests that when we switch from one task to another, part of our attention stays stuck on the task we’ve just left, especially if it’s unfinished.

So while bouncing between emails, client work, quotes and admin might feel productive, our brains may actually be carrying bits of each task into the next.

Time blocking is one way to cut down on that switching. It might look like:

👉 Doing all your admin in one block
👉 Protecting a morning for project work
👉 Grouping calls together
👉 Setting aside specific time for new business

The aim isn’t to turn your diary into a military operation. It’s to give your brain fewer reasons to keep changing gear. For freelancers, that could be the real win: not squeezing more into the day, but reaching the end of it with a little more left in the tank 🔋

What a month September was! 🎉

With summer behind us, it’s been full steam ahead across our TownSq spaces: new beginnings, growing teams, plenty of community activity and (we won’t lie) quite a lot of cake 🍰

📍 In Bicester, we said a fond farewell to Perch and a big hello to TownSq Bicester! We celebrated the new name with a breakfast launch party. It was lovely to see the building full of familiar faces and to watch new conversations sparking up around the room.

📍 At TownSq HQ, the wider team got together for our strategy weekend. We celebrated wins from across the network, swapped ideas and spent some proper time planning what comes next.

📍 The Shell Store team have been out and about too, joining the Herefordshire Means Business Networking Morning and the Elevate Ladies Lunch, where they caught up with old friends and made plenty of new ones.

📍 A huge congratulations to Seaglow Digital! 👏 They’ve welcomed two new team members and are moving from coworking into their own office in Bognor Regis. Seeing businesses grow like this is our favourite thing.

Elsewhere we had the Make It Your Business event in Tunbridge Wells, a Macmillan Coffee Morning in Bicester, and a whole host of workshops in person and online.

There's a strange pressure when you freelance to make every week look like a good week, with plenty of work on and projects moving along nicely. But the truth is, lots of weeks don't look like that. Maybe you're waiting to hear back from a client, or a piece of work has fallen through. Maybe you're completely flat out but still feel like you're not getting anywhere, or you're simply trying to work out where the next job is coming from.

What's lovely is that when you spend time with other freelancers, you realise just how normal all of that is. Hardly anyone has it all neatly figured out. We're all juggling the work, the admin, the money and the next opportunity, and occasionally wondering what on earth we're doing! 😄

We probably don't talk about that side of things enough. Freelancing isn't about having it all together, it's about keeping things moving.

Working from home can be brilliant. No commute. More flexibility. More control over your day. For a lot of people, it works really well.

And increasingly, people are mixing it up. ONS figures show that 28% of working adults in Great Britain were hybrid working in 2025.

But perhaps the future of work isn't really about choosing between home and the office.

Back in 2020, we published our whitepaper 'What if everyone could walk to work?'. It explored a different idea: what if more people could work closer to where they actually live, rather than travelling miles simply to sit at a laptop? That feels even more relevant now.

Working from home has so many advantages, but sometimes you need a fresh space to focus. Somewhere to meet a client. A change of scene. Or just a day away from the kitchen table when home has started to feel a little too much like work.

And working locally can mean more than convenience. It can mean less commuting, more time in our towns, more money spent locally and stronger connections with the people and businesses around us.

Maybe the future of work isn't remote, maybe it's closer to home?

August brought the heat, the holidays, and a slightly slower summer pace in some of our spaces, but there was still plenty going on behind the scenes. Now the kids are back at school and September is well underway, here's a quick catch-up on what happened last month across our network:

📍 Bicester: The Bicester rebrand is officially underway! Keep an eye out for the new look popping up around the building ahead of our launch party on 22nd September. The team has also been busy building new relationships across Bicester and Oxfordshire as part of our ongoing community mapping.

📍 Kingston: We welcomed students from the IgnitED summer camp, who shared their experience through a series of talks and workshops. We also celebrated a huge milestone, Kingston officially turned two! 🎉

📍 Bognor Regis: August marked an exciting step as Bognor Regis officially became a station adopter with Govia Thameslink, opening the door to new community events, exhibitions and local activity. There was also a members' curry night, though sadly nobody remembered to grab any photos!

📍 Hereford: The regular Ladies Lunch continues to bring the community together every third Friday of the month, and the space hosted its first ever study day alongside partner Holly Bolt.

📍 Crewe: Another month of connection and collaboration, with our coworking community continuing to grow. We've also been working closely with the Youth Zone team as they settle into their new office space.

📍 Tunbridge Wells: A busy one! Existing members expanded into larger offices, new tenants arrived, and plenty of tours took place. We even had a visit from entrepreneur Simon Squibb.

📍 Barnstaple: The Devon heatwave made August feel properly summery, with a slightly more relaxed, holiday-season rhythm across the space.

September is already shaping up to be a busy one, with new events, connections and a few exciting launches on the way. Plenty to look forward to!
