And of course, there were some very special guests who came along to the Shell Store....It was lovely to see Nancy Billings, now 102 but still enjoying a glass of bubbly, and her daughter Julie.

There are more freelancers in the UK than people employed by the NHS.

More than the NHS.

And yet - be honest, how many of you have sent an invoice and immediately wondered if you charged too much?

How many of you have thrown something in "just this once" to keep the peace?
Said yes to scope creep because you didn't want to seem difficult?
Discounted yourself before the client even blinked?

This isn't a ‘you problem’. It's a ‘culture problem’.

Freelancers have been conditioned to be grateful, flexible, and accommodating to the point of giving themselves away. And clients - often without even realising it, have learned to expect it.

But here's the truth: an economy that relies on you this heavily doesn't get to undervalue you. Charge your rate. Hold your scope. Back yourself.

You are not a favour. You are infrastructure.

Growth shouldn’t just show up in revenue.

According to our latest Impact Report, 56% of TownSq members have increased their team’s average salaries.

That’s businesses not just growing, but sharing that growth with the people around them.

When companies are built sustainably, value flows through the whole team, not just the top line.

Stronger teams. More stability. Better businesses.

A bookkeeper we know has been running his business for six years. Good reputation, steady clients, does solid work.

But new clients had dried up. Referrals had slowed. Nothing dramatic, just quieter than it used to be.

When we got talking, it became pretty obvious what had happened. He'd gone fully remote during COVID and just... stayed there. And in doing so, he'd quietly stepped out of his ecosystem.

Not a word people use much in everyday business. But it matters.

Your ecosystem is everyone around you, the people who refer you, the networks you're part of, the community that knows your name. It's not built online. It's built in places, through repeated contact, through showing up.

We've been researching entrepreneurial ecosystems for a while now, and one thing keeps coming up: the businesses that thrive aren't necessarily the best at what they do. They're the ones that are most connected, to the right people, in the right places, at the right time.

Physical presence isn't about having a fancy address. It's about staying woven into the fabric of the place you serve. Step out of your ecosystem for long enough, and it quietly closes around the gap you left.

📎 We've recently published a new white paper exploring what ecosystems are, and why they matter for entrepreneurs. Worth a read: https://zurl.co/HxpSu

The internet will give you 47 frameworks for your pricing strategy before lunch.
Threads, takes, theories, templates. Everyone's got a system. Everyone's got the answer.

And honestly? A lot of it is good. But at some point, reading more of it stops helping and starts getting in the way.

What actually moves things forward, in our experience, is saying it out loud to another human being who gets it.

Not posting about it. Not consuming another thread. Just sitting across from someone, talking it through, and seeing what comes back.

We've been doing a lot of work on entrepreneurial ecosystems over the past few years - the people, places and relationships that actually determine whether a business thrives. And one thing keeps coming up: the most connected entrepreneurs aren't the ones with the best content strategy. They're the ones who show up. Who are in the room. Who have people around them they can think out loud with.

That kind of connection doesn't happen in a feed. It happens in a place.

If you're at that point right now, head full, tabs open, not sure what to do next - come and find us.

We've got networking events and coworking spaces across the UK. And if you want to go deeper on the ecosystem idea, we've just published a paper on exactly that.

From South Wales to the South Coast, we've got spaces across the UK.

Not because we're trying to be everywhere - because good work happens everywhere, and some of that work needs a room.

Not a Zoom link. Not another async thread. A proper room, with the right people in it.

Remote work changed everything, and most of it was good. But there's one thing a screen has never managed to replicate: the moment a conversation goes off-script and something genuinely new gets created.

TownSq meeting rooms are available to book by the hour - check availability online at https://zurl.co/up8D1

Nearly half of TownSq member businesses have grown their teams.

That’s one of the key findings from our latest Impact Report, and it marks a big shift, from working solo to building something bigger.

Hiring is a step change. It requires confidence, clarity, and the right support around you.

In the right environment, that transition becomes more achievable, and more sustainable.

From founder to employer, that’s real progress.
