🚨 Serious fire safety failings lead to a suspended prison sentence and more than £28,000 in financial penalties.

A Worcestershire business owner has been sentenced after repeatedly breaching a Prohibition Notice and intentionally obstructing fire safety inspectors.

Inspectors found:

❌ A deliberately tampered-with fire alarm, with sounders removed and smoke detectors covered.
❌ No protected escape routes.
❌ Locked final exits.
❌ Inadequate firefighting equipment.
❌ Breaches in fire compartmentation that could allow fire and smoke to spread rapidly.

These failings left occupants at serious risk, with little or no opportunity to escape safely if a fire occurred.

The outcome:
⚖️ Two years’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
⚖️ 100 hours of unpaid work.
⚖️ £15,000 in fines, plus prosecution costs and a victim surcharge—totalling £28,458.70.

The court warned that further breaches could result in immediate imprisonment.

A Kidderminster business owner has been sentenced following a successful prosecution by Hereford & Worcester Fire Authority for serious breaches of fire safety legislation.
The Court heard that fire alarm systems had been deliberately tampered with, escape routes were compromised, and occupants were placed at significant risk. The Judge described the premises as a "death trap" and highlighted the extremely high risk to life.
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service remains committed to protecting residents, workers and visitors from the risks posed by unsafe premises. Businesses and property owners have a legal responsibility to ensure that fire safety measures are in place and maintained.

Where serious risks to life are identified, the Service will not hesitate to take enforcement action to protect the public.

New research has revealed generational differences in whether people notice fire doors, understand their function and know where to learn about them, raising serious concerns about public safety in the buildings people use every day.

The survey, carried out for the Fire Door Safety Week campaign – Check it, close it: Protection starts at the door – found that shockingly, 38% of Gen Z respondents (aged 18 – 29) feel safe when a fire door is wedged open, and 21% of Millennials (aged 30 – 45) believe a fire door is simply a door painted red.
