We recently had the pleasure to work with AX hotels in order to test the usability of their website. By sourcing participants that would typically use websites like theirs to book holidays we were able to get them great insights on how these people behave when booking online and a lot of positive feedback about the website.

If you want to know how your potential customers see your website, get in touch with us for a chat to find out more.

It's a common belief that you need to launch a product in order to learn from your customers. This typically means many months are spent deciding on and building a minimum viable product (MVP) with the associated cost in order to get this data and learning from any mistakes here can take a long time.

In a design sprint, a handful of people from around your company commit to a few days of facilitated workshops that consist of around 20 simple excercises. It is the quickest way to guide your team towards a direction based on the real opinions of your customers. The sprint has been tested hundreds of times in the real world by companies like Google, Facebook, Slack and many, many more.

Benefits of Design Sprints:
Speed: Sprints break down complex projects into manageable chunks, allowing teams to make quick progress.
Risk Reduction: By rapidly generating and testing ideas, teams minimize the risk of investing in unsuccessful concepts.
User-Centricity: Sprints focus on user needs, ensuring solutions resonate in the real world.

That’s where we come in! At Use Ability, we specialise in the critical user testing phase of design sprints. We help to validate your prototypes, uncover usability issues, and gather valuable insights from real users.
We think you will be pleased at how cost effective it is, get in touch for a chat about how we can help you learn from your ideas.

The Long-Term Value of Strategic User Research

User research is indispensable for guiding product strategy and design. While tactical user research has an important role in optimizing immediate goals, businesses should be careful not to overlook the enormous value of strategic research.

Tactical research - focused on minor tweaks and incremental improvements - can certainly generate quick wins. However, an over-reliance on tactical studies often stems from short-term thinking. While superficially appealing, this approach fails to provide the deep user insights necessary for true innovation and differentiation.

In contrast, strategic user research illuminates new opportunities and charts a course beyond marginal gains. Through foundational qualitative research like ethnography and concept testing, strategic studies identify emerging needs, industry trends, and opportunities for disruption. This provides an invaluable long-term perspective that tactical research inherently lacks.

Yes, tactical research can optimize conversion rates, improve task completion, and prop up other key metrics. But only strategic research provides a nuanced understanding of customers and where they are headed. Businesses that want to lead rather than follow must make strategic research an essential part of their user studies mix.

Of course, companies have finite resources and research bandwidth. But those investing heavily in tactical studies at the expense of strategic research do so at their peril. Optimizing today's products means little if you miss seismic shifts in your industry and market.

The most successful product teams use strategic research to envision the future while leveraging select tactical research to incrementally improve current offerings. But the lion's share of resources should be dedicated to strategic studies providing unique foresight and vision. This balance allows product leaders to innovate fearlessly while ensuring commercial viability.

With a long-term perspective provided by strategic user research, businesses can build products that don't just meet today's needs, but shape tomorrow.

Remote live moderation vs In person live moderation:

Having done plenty of both, my opinion is that you get a far better true to life result from remote. The reason? The participants are all in their own environment using their usual equipment, therefore getting a far more realistic result as they are more relaxed and familiar. You can chat to them and make them feel at ease far quicker and easier as they are in their home / office etc.

Technical issues such as poor broadband etc are real life problems and thus give a far more natural reponse as they would normally battle with such issues when using the app or website, instead of a super fast all singing all dancing set up in a studio for face to face studies.

Psycologically speaking it's a more positve response from remote live testing, as the participants are in their space not a false clinical studio (doesnt matter how much like a living room you make it).

So I am fully on the side of remote live moderated testing, as all in all its a far more natural and positive response.

Who Benefits From Usability Testing?

Usability testing is a technique that can help you gauge customer satisfaction, improve your product, and reduce design costs.

What is Usability Testing?

Usability testing is a type of user research that helps developers identify problems with their products before release. By testing with real users, developers can get feedback about the product’s design, function, and usability. This feedback can help developers make changes to the product before it goes to market, which can save time and money.

There are many different types of usability testing, but all follow a similar process:

1. The test administrator sets up the test environment and recruits participants.

2. Participants are given tasks to complete using the product being tested.

3. The administrator observes the participants as they use the product and takes notes on any problems that occur.

4. After the test is complete, the administrator analyses the data and writes a report detailing the findings.

5. The development team uses this report to make changes to the product before release.

Usability testing is an important tool for any development team, as it can help identify potential problems with a product before it goes to market. By taking the time to test with real users, developers can save time and money in the long run.
