🔍Top HR Myths Worth Busting - 10 Things your HR Team want you to know.
1. “You don’t need a contract for a casual worker.”
→ Reality: Every employment relationship deserves clarity.
Simple, compliant documentation protects both sides and prevents future issues.
2. “You can dismiss anyone during probation without process.”
→ Reality: Probation doesn’t override employment law.
Fairness, communication, and documentation are still necessary.
3. “HR makes all the decisions.”
→ Reality: HR advises and supports the process – but decisions are led by managers
HR ensures fairness, consistency and legal compliance. It’s a partnership. HR protects the organisation and champions the workforce.
4. “That’s HR’s job.”
→ Reality: HR guides but managers act.
Line managers are responsible for day-to-day people matters, from performance conversations to managing absence. HR is there to support, not do it for you.
5. “This job cant be done flexibly or remotely.”
→ Reality: Most roles - even frontline ones - can be adapted to some degree.

This weekend, I got to stand with my best friend as “Best Woman” at his wedding.

I’ve been called many things in my time, not all of which are repeatable, but this title really meant a lot to me. It was a role built on years of trust, laughter, and showing up for each other - especially when things got hard.

I had a front-row seat to a moment of true joy, vulnerability and commitment.

I was previously his HR Manager for many years - supporting him through growth, change, and the complexities of leadership. We not only built a strong working relationship, but a partnership rooted in honesty, care, and mutual respect.

Because when you do this work well, it doesn’t just stay in the office. It becomes part of how people lead, live, and love.

The day was shared with a number of our former colleagues - many of whom I now consider some of my closest friends. Some still affectionately call me “mum”, despite the fact I’m clearly far too young for that to be true(!).So much of my work in HR is about relationships. Not just policies or procedures, but the human connections that make workplaces thrive.

My job is to stand beside people when it matters most. To hold space, ask the right questions, and help ensure the next step is taken with clarity and compassion. Within every team is a tapestry of relationships, identities, and lived experiences.

Some roles you’re hired for. Others you grow into. And I’m super proud of this one.
