A quote might appear cheaper in comparison but is it fit for purpose? Does it offer value for money? Ever heard of the phrase 'pay less, more stress'?

When comparing quotes from different suppliers/subcontractors you need to be 100% sure they are like-for-like. Review the program, the materials, resources and labour provisions. Not to mention the small print.

Don't get caught out!

Yes we love Excel - and we're proud of it!

There are various tools that help us assess and control a projects' financial impact and profitability. Bluebeam, Ensign, Costx, Trimble and many more, but we often come back to our trusty steed, the Excel spreadsheet.

Here's one to watch out for, to avoid risk of disagreements with your client....

Not everyone within the client team is contractually authorised to issue an instruction under the contract. Ensure the person you are taking the instruction from, is the person stated within the contract and/or you have it in writing from the individual(s) stated in the contract giving them authority for issuing such instructions.

And always get it in writing! Whilst you may have an excellent long-standing relationship with a respected member of your client's team, and you’ve never had any issues with them before, what if they move on next month or in 6-months time? That verbal agreement may not mean much to their successor.

When it comes to variations on a project, do you find you're spending longer discussing and documenting them than implementing them?

We're often brought in to act as mediators or negotiators, working closely with consultants, subcontractors, clients and internal teams to swiftly agree a position on the best way forward, upline and downstream, as well as documenting what's needed and agreed, so you can get on with the job! That's what we do.....

Have you ever worked on a project that went perfectly to plan? There are always hidden issues and unforeseeable problems uncovered during project ex*****on. Some can have a severe impact on schedule and costs.

This is why we use project risk registers, to identify, analyse and solve as many of them in advance as possible.

We're not control freaks(!) but our aim is to control a project to limit risk and tightly manage costs.

We’ve worked on many different types of projects and buildings over the years but this is a first for us. A new build aircraft hangar at Biggin Hill airport. And it was awesome!

The shell and core contract value is £73M. We were appointed to carry out a final account measure for one of the sub contractors, using Bluebeam.

A private jet company are the client, who on completion of the build will be fitting the hangar out, bringing in machinery and aircraft maintenance equipment.
