LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO!
If you’re a marketer in Bucks and you’ve got a challenge you’ve been going round in circles with…
Bring it to The Marketing Meetup.
Our next The Marketing Meetup IRL: Bucks is coming up, and we are putting you in the driving seat.
Introducing The Reading Room Roundtable.
No sitting quietly while someone talks at you.
No generic marketing presentations.
No pretending everything is going perfectly. 😉
Instead, bring a real marketing challenge and get a room full of experienced marketers thinking about it with you.
Maybe you’re…
👉 Struggling to get buy-in for an idea
👉 Wondering why a campaign isn’t delivering
👉 Trying to make a limited budget go further
👉 Figuring out what AI actually means for your marketing
👉 Wrestling with a tricky client, colleague or stakeholder
👉 Completely stuck and just need someone to look at it differently
This is your opportunity to get fresh perspectives, ideas and practical advice from the people in the room.
And here's the thing…
You don’t even have to bring a challenge.
Because someone else will.
And the conversation you overhear, the idea someone shares or the experience another marketer brings to the table could be exactly what you need right now.
That’s the magic of The Marketing Meetup.
Marketers helping marketers.
No judgement. Just good people, honest conversations and useful ideas.
📅 9th September
📍 TMM Bucks IRL
Places are limited, so if you’ve been thinking “I really should come along to one of these…”
This is the one.
👉 Book your place: https://themarketingmeetup.com/events/buckinghamshire/
And tag that marketer in Bucks who you know would get something out of this.
Because we'd much rather see them there than hear afterwards…
“Oh no, I wish I’d known about that.” 👀

The Buckinghamshire Marketing Meetup is an informal, friendly place for the marketers of Buckinghamshire to meet, learn, and share knowledge with one another. Come in 'listen' not 'sell' mode :)

Our next The Marketing Meetup IRL: Bucks is coming up, and there is still time to sign up.
This month, we’re doing things a little differently with The Reading Room Roundtable.

Rather than us deciding what you should be talking about, you bring the marketing challenge.
Got something you could do with another brain on?
Maybe you’re…
👉 Struggling to get buy-in for an idea
👉 Wondering why a campaign isn’t quite working
👉 Trying to decide where to focus a limited budget
👉 Figuring out where AI fits into your marketing
👉 Facing a challenge with a client, colleague or stakeholder
👉 Simply stuck and could do with a fresh perspective
Bring it along.

We’ll tap into the collective experience in the room to share ideas, different perspectives and practical advice.

And if you don’t have a question?
Come anyway.
Your experience, perspective or “we tried that…” might be exactly what someone else needs.

Because this one is all about the community helping the community. ❤️

If you were in pain, you’d seek medical expert advice right?
What’s if your business was in pain? Who could you/should you ask? …
For example …

Someone who handled your account management or client services support is leaving and therefore creating a workload and capacity issue short term …
Or your business or agency is growing and you’ve won new clients and work that needs onboarding and traffic management …
Or you’ve dropped a ball, mucked up or lost a client or two …

If you feel your marketing business or marketing agency is experiencing such challenges, situations and chronic pain points, we can see consult with you! (Our wait list is not immediate but not forever ton wait either 😉)

We can provide short term, interim and long term pain relief that is bespoke to you and your marketing ops symptoms by prescribing mapping out work solutions, capacity management help, prioritisation, auditing and improving processes, setting up systems, fire fighting short term, external and internal comms, managing accounts, servicing and satisfying clients, picking up and running with projects, making intros where more than is is needed and quite frankly getting s**t done to plaster the pain but solve it longer term too.

How would you describe your agency’s or company’s account management/client services support?
Are you simply the G.O.A.T of it all?
Are you aggressive and territorial like a hippo?
Are you solitary which is less than ideal like a rhino?
Are you social which is a good think like a chimp?
Or are you empathic which is also a good trait like an elephant?

The rhino is my favourite of these animals at a zoo but not the best one when it comes to its applicable skills for AM/CS support. Solitary suggests a lack of comms and a relationship and charging at a client when rattled isn’t the done thing either! So we’ll say we are the GOAT at it. 🐐

The Art of Client Service – Robert Solomon
Have you read this book?
I recently did and these are my thoughts and takeaways (from the classic guide third edition)

* What makes great client service?
Communication, written and verbally. Listening and hearing (two ways comms! And establish this early)
Being good on your feet (reacting)
The ability to generate ideas
Qualities – integrity and judgement. Plus humour, patience, discipline, meticulousness, collaborative, service orientated and a sense of context. Be open minded and flexible, but no need to compromise on integrity and honest

* Account management’s role
Relationship building, gaining trust and doing great work
Knowing a little about a lot of things. You don’t need to be fluent in every marketing language there are native speakers to call on for this
Deliver what’s in the best interest of the client
Go beyond resourcing and competitive wisdom
Be an expert on your client, their wishes, nuances
Always manage client expectations from the outset
Make sure your team/the team is as invested as you are
Manage/avoid scope creep
Keep a client relationship by building trust and establishing a partner not just supplier relationship
Invest in your client relationships, as you would your personal ones. And always think of the endgame

* How to run a meeting
Start and end on time
Create an agenda in advance
Come to the table prepared
Guide the discussion
Follow up – write a report, not just a write up eg include decision’s reached, items outstanding, who is responsible for resolving these and immediate next steps from client and agency

* Client Service principles
Show up
Follow up
Speak up
Make it up (be open to exploring new ideas/ways)
Never give up

* Other top tips
Happy clients can help you gain new ones
Consult before committing
Acknowledge and deal with unhappy clients, don’t ignore

“It is often the smallest gesture that makes the biggest impact.”
“Counterbalance client demands with agency realities.”

It’s a good book and I would recommend a read if you are in the agency space (and there is lots more on top of this summary in the book to learn!).
If you get a copy and read it, let me know what you think …

Over-servicing vs. over-delivering
These two get mixed up all the time, and knowing the difference could save you hours (and margin):
• Over-servicing is saying yes to extra work that was never scoped or paid for, usually out of guilt or fear of upsetting the client
• Over-delivering is doing the work brilliantly, within scope, so the client feels the value
One quietly drains your business. The other builds it. Worth a quick check on your own accounts this month, in terms of where you are doing either of these things.

The juggle is real this time of year — here's what's helping. If your August is anything like most other marketers and agency owners, it’s a mix of "everyone's on annual leave so it's quiet" and "everyone's on annual leave so I'm covering three roles.

Summer's the perfect excuse for a proper read.

What marketing, business or agency books have you been reading recently? I would love your recommendations.

Sunday was National Book Lovers Day, so share your best marketing and business book recommendations…

What does an account manager actually do?
Ask ten people what account management covers and you'll get ten different answers. So let's break it down into the probable stages most client relationships move through:
• Pitching — helping shape and land the opportunity
• Winning — the handover from "yes" to "right, let's do this properly"
• Onboarding — getting everyone aligned, briefed, and set up for success (this is where good AM saves you months of pain later)
• Relationship nurturing — the ongoing, unglamorous, essential work of keeping clients happy, informed, and heard, and communicated with
• Delivery — making sure what was promised actually gets done, on time, without you having to hold every thread yourself. And stopping you be an accidental bottle neck.

Notice how much of that isn't "creative" work? That's the point. It's the scaffolding or foundations that lets the creative work actually happen.

Why every marketer needs "Another You"? That's where account management comes in. Read our blog for why and how...
