Mahindra Reva plans to launch its e20 electric car in the UK next month, a senior executive told a London newspaper. “We want to take electric cars out of the elitist market and make it more of a run-of-the-mill thing,” Arvind Mathew, CEO, Mahindra Reva, was quoted by the Evening Standard newspaper. “Our product is really designed for city commuting, not for long distance driving.” [ 155 more words. ]

More than £150,000 has been paid out in compensation for slips, trips and falls in Lancaster over the past five years, a Freedom of Information request has revealed. Some 160 incidents of broken bones, whiplash, snapped ligaments and cuts and bruises have been reported to Lancashire County and Lancaster City Councils since 2011, with the highest single claim resulting in a £17,431 payout. A new report has suggested electric cars - thanks to advances in battery technology - could drop to be the same price as traditional petrol and diesel-powered cars by as soon as 2022. According to the report by Bloomburg Business, in the last twelve months battery prices have dropped by a massive 35%, meaning they’ll soon be as cheap to produce as a current petrol or diesel-powered engine. Motorists are being warned that ‘car cloning’ is believed to be on the rise and drivers could be at risk of fines as criminals substitute the identity of vehicles using stolen vehicle data. Car cloning is a serious offence which involves the theft of a vehicle’s identity including the registration number and vehicle identification number (VIN). These details can be used on other similar vehicles, which are then sold for profit or utilised for petty theft or organised crime. [ 371 more words. ]

Group sentenced for staging crash following IFED investigation A five-strong ‘crash for cash’ gang has been sentenced today at the Old Bailey for trying to defraud insurer RSA of more than £30,000 by staging an accident. The group was sentenced to a total of 37 months’ imprisonment (suspended for two years), ordered to pay £10,800 in compensation and costs and ordered to carry out over 700 hours of unpaid work (see below for individual sentences). Judge Gregory ordered driver Afzaal Bin Alam, his brother Asaad and the two other passengers, Naqib Mohamammed and Elias Ali – all from Coventry – to pay £10,000 each to van driver Terrence Blackwell at a trial at Coventry Crown Court on 1 and 2 March this year.
