Well done to our very own, Rhys Hughes.

Rhys is a 3rd year Welding apprentice here at Meiller-Boweld and has been nominated for this years Commercial Motor Apprentice of The Year Award.

Today, Rhys is competing in the World Skills competition at Coleg Cambria, flying the flag for the talented team at Meiller-Boweld!

Rhys is one of many apprentices we have were at Meiller-Boweld and we are very proud to have such a great team and talented young welders.

🚛 Celebrating the next generation of road transport talent…

The Commercial Motor Apprentice of the Year Award, launched in memory of Danny Broomfield, continues to shine a light on the outstanding apprentices helping to keep the UK transport industry moving.

Although entries have now closed, the standard of this year’s shortlisted apprentices highlights just how bright the future looks.

One standout is Rhys Hughes, Welding Apprentice at Meiller-Boweld UK Ltd. Reflecting on his journey into the industry, Rhys said:

💬 “I went into the road industry after being approached at college about apprenticeship opportunities… after speaking with employers, this company stood out to me because the work sounded the most interesting and it seemed like the best place to gain a wide range of experience and develop practical skills in the industry.”

Rhys is already developing a strong blend of technical and transferable skills, from precision welding in multiple positions to working safely with overhead cranes, alongside building confidence in communication, timekeeping, and problem-solving on the shop floor. Looking ahead, he hopes to progress into a leadership role:

💬 “In the next 10 years… I hope to lead my own team of fabricator welders.”

Apprentices like Rhys are a powerful reminder that the industry is built not just on vehicles and equipment, but on people learning, progressing, and pushing standards forward every day.

🏆 The overall winner will be selected by an expert judging panel and announced live at Road Transport Expo 2026.
