This charming egg shaped silver nutmeg grater, dating to the reign of George III, is a wonderful example of the small luxuries people once carried with them. Designed to hold a whole nutmeg inside, it would be opened at the centre to reveal a tiny grater — ready to add a fresh shaving of spice to food or drink, whether at home or in a tavern.
In the 18th century, nutmeg was a prized and fashionable ingredient, and carrying your own was something of a statement. These beautifully made “toys” were both practical and a subtle display of status.
The egg shape wasn’t just decorative — it fits neatly in the hand or pocket, and of course, makes it the perfect little talking point at this time of year.
This lovely example featured in one of our recent Fine Silver Auctions.
Happy Easter.
