Encouraging Potential

Encouraging Potential Love what you do for a living ... make a living doing what you love! Work is supposed to be FUN, not a chore - add your value to the world with ease & JOY!

Everyone has what I call your Joyful Genius - that work that you love to do and are naturally talented at. It's just that it can sometimes be far from clear what it is, and how to get paid handsomely for doing it. Having been through the challenges of a good job turning a bit sour, I understand the concerns faced by experts in their field when they feel that they just have to get out of there! In

2003 I was stuck in a job I hated, that was making me physically and mentally ill, where I had no alignment with what my bosses wanted me to do for them – and to clients! I felt that I had no purpose in life – I was just drifting along, dead inside, hoping that somehow it would all come right. Eventually it got so bad that I could hardly eat properly, I was dreading every day in the office, I felt like thumping my boss most of the time. I had to get out of there. So I took redundancy, to get back to a life with a purpose. And I soon found myself back in a similar position – in 2006 the job was better, the boss was a bit less of a bully, I was even driving a nicer car. But I was still floundering, asking myself is this is all there is? That’s when I started to apply the fundamental principles that I include in my coaching, and now I’ve never been happier …

In all honesty, it’s not been an easy ride. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, spent silly amounts of money (just ask the financial controller!) on stuff that just didn’t work, or I didn’t put it into practice. And I lost my way a few times too – lost my focus on the real purpose of my life - En-couraging Potential. I was lucky, my financial situation meant I was able to just chuck it all in. And I know that for many people that's simply not an option. That's why my coaching now focuses on how you can bring the whole of you to your work whether that's as an independent, an executive, or an employee. And by doing that, to get back to that excitement and joy you used to find in your work. To find the courage to be all your willing to be - your true potential. If you are very good at what you do but you're feeling a bit lost, finding work all rather frustrating and disappointing, feeling bored and unappreciated, let's talk about your potential and get you making the difference you know you can be.

Here's a question you can ask yourself if you want work to be something fulfilling and meaningful for you. It doesn't matter whether you're an innovator, a producer, a deliverer, or an administrator, whatever you do every working day will be changing the world, a little, or a lot.

How does your work improve things? I'd really love to know.

I loved appearing on Katisha Hyland's "The Producers" podcast. Our conversation ranged far and wide, from the similarity between the roles of account managers (my old corporate role) and producers (Katisha's genius), through to how make work better than just what I call 'tolerably s**t'.

Andrew Horder from Encouraging Potential joins Tish for an episode of The Producers Network all about extracting the best from your employees, empowering you...

Anyone who wants to make a difference in the world of work needs to read this Substack article *written by AI*.

After scaring the pants off you, it gives some very good advice at the end. The sort of advice us coaches and consultants have been sharing for years, but now backed up by what happens if you don't - according to the AI-monster itself.

In that, it's a great example of what it recommends: use your time NOW to build something the inexorable advance of AI makes more powerful instead of less necessary.

It's a sad indictment of the western view of work that so many people are commenting along the lines of "bring it on" to this approach to employee management.

I invite you to think about this: what would it take for losing the opportunity to contribute to be the worst thing that could happen to you at work?

In Japan, there's a subtle but widespread workplace practice designed to quietly push unwanted employees out the door—known informally as becoming a "window sitter."

Employees suddenly find themselves receiving no work, assignments, or invitations to meetings.

They're effectively frozen out, isolated from colleagues, and left feeling useless and undervalued.

This passive-aggressive tactic aims to make the employee voluntarily resign due to discomfort and lack of purpose.

Since companies rarely fire staff directly, this approach helps maintain the company's reputation and avoids legal complications.

Although controversial, the practice persists, often leaving foreign employees puzzled and distressed.

For those unaware, suddenly being ignored or sidelined could indicate you're being encouraged to leave.

Understanding this practice can help foreigners in Japan recognize the signs early and decide on their next steps.

𝗜'𝗺 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀?

This Gallup data on employee pride in their organisations' offerings is worrying - how can anyone be doing their best work when they don't believe in the product?

The % matches quite closely with the latest employee engagement figures (31% for US, 23% global in 2024, with a similar peak in 2020 followed by a steady decline since). That suggests a correlation, but there are likely to be many causal factors operating in both directions.

But it's not beyond the realms of possibility that either lack of pride could result in lower engagement, or that general dissatisfaction with the employer could bring with it a lack of pride in the product.
