Is the term 'Gender Pay Gap' misleading?

To the uninformed, many believe that the 'Gender Pay Gap' means that men are being paid more than women for doing the same job. Generally speaking, especially in larger companies, this is not the case.

The general public would find it hard to believe that there would be a Gender Pay Gap (in favour of men) in an organisation even if the average salary for women at each level in the company was higher than their male counterparts! (As shown in the table)

What there tends to be, is a 'Gender Opportunity Gap' with too few women occupying the higher level jobs in organisations. This is no less an issue than that implied by the 'Pay Gap' term, but unless you actually know what the problem is, you can't work out what the solution should be!

What is the difference between a 'clean' athlete and one who's previously been banned twice for drug use?

Well, if you use the 2015 World Athletics Championships' Men's 100m Final as the test, the answer is 0.01 seconds.

But this almost inconceivably small difference in time, hides the true difference, which is, in fact almost too large to quantify.

The problem of drugs in athletics will not be solved by one clean athlete beating a drugs cheat (whether or not the word 'former' should be inserted before the word 'drugs'), but had the opposite happened, it would have encouraged even more athletes to take short cuts by way of performance-enhancing drugs as a potential route to fame and glory!
