Can't get online, can't get by🚀

To launch Get Online Week, we’re urging the Chancellor to cut connectivity costs and invest in digital and AI skills, as new research reveals the scale of digital barriers across the UK. With three quarters of UK adults facing digital barriers being of working age, now it is more important than ever to bake in digital inclusion.

📅 This week (19th – 26th October) is Get Online Week.

As the world grows increasingly digital and services move from in-person to online, it’s important that nobody is left behind.

📶 If you or someone you know is facing digital barriers, there are resources out there that can help! We work with Good Things Foundation to offer help and support at our drop-ins as well as SIM cards from the National Databank to get you online. Many community centres, libraries and public spaces around Hull also offer free internet and access to devices like computers and printing facilities!

🔒 But we can help each other too. Check with your friends and family. Are they comfortable accessing and using online banking? Do they know how to book an appointment through NHS Online or their local surgery’s website? How safe do they feel on the internet?

📣 What a lot of us take for granted can be a source of difficulty for others so if you can share your knowledge, do so!

📅 October 14th is International E-Waste Day – but what does that mean?

♻ Put simply, it’s a global initiative that aims to reduce e-waste whether that’s through re-use, refurbishment or recycling.

The focus this year is on ‘Fast Tech’ (similar to ‘Fast Fashion’) which is a growing problem across the world. We’re seeing an increasing number of mass-produced, low-cost devices with short lifespans being thrown away. Items like vapes, handheld fans, light-up gadgets and earphones.

🗑 These items don’t belong in the bin!

In most cases they can be recycled along with your old chargers, cables and other unwanted electrical devices. Every item incorrectly disposed of contributes to landfill and wastes the potential that the item holds. They could even pose a risk to workers handling the waste, as some components can be toxic or prone to causing fires.

We’re trying to make it easier to recycle your devices in Hull and beyond, and we recently partnered with Material Focus to do just that. You can drop your e-waste into our shop, call us for free collections of larger quantities or visit a number of our new drop-off points found here:

🔌 Your Great Cable Challenge starter pack is here!

Ready to tackle that drawer of doom, but don’t know where to start? Here’s how to take part:

1️⃣ Gather your unwanted cables - dig out those tangled wires, mystery leads and old chargers you no longer need.

2️⃣ Sort them - check what works, what you still need and use our cable guide to help identify any mystery cables.

3️⃣ Bag them up - gather all your unwanted cables together ready for recycling.

4️⃣ Find your nearest recycling point - use the Recycle Your Electricals Recycling Locator to find your nearest drop-off point.

5️⃣ Head out on your Great Cable Challenge adventure - in many urban areas, one is less than a 15-minute walk away!

Why bother? Cables contain valuable materials like copper, an essential but finite resource that can be recovered and reused to make everything from phones to clean energy technology. 🌍

So this International E-Waste Day, help us rescue those forgotten cables and stop valuable materials being left at the back of your cupboards.

Will you pledge to tackle your drawer of doom and recycle your unwanted cables? ♻️

For the next couple of days we're manning a booth at the Circular Tech Expo at Farnborough Exhibition Centre. After a long drive down and a hectic morning setting up, we're ready to talk sustainable tech and the positive impact it can have on our communities.

We hope it will be a great opportunity to bump heads with like-minded people and hopefully make some connections along the way. Reducing electrical waste going to landfill is everyone's responsibility and we are much more likely to succeed if we work together. If you happen to be at the expo, we hope to see you there, the sweet treats we brought with us won't eat themselves!

Much like our new locker and storage boxes, our drop-in sessions are also looking a bit more pink and purple!

As well as our normal technical support to help you keep your devices in tip-top shape and make the most of the digital world, we'll also be focusing on the importance of recycling e-waste. We're happy to take any electrical items that you want to recycle and offer advice on how we can all tackle e-waste responsibly (but we'll leave the hypnotism to Hypnocat).

We've already collected a handful of items from our drop-in sessions and Recycle Your Electricals drop-off locations, which will soon be processed by our technicians and hopefully continue to see use by someone else!

Hopefully the first of many, we're looking forward to seeing where this project takes us 😊

Thanks to Councillor Shane McMurray for taking the time to speak to our founder, Sam, about the locker and of course thanks to Recycle Your Electricals for making the project possible!
