There's a lot of information to know about threads, needle sizes etc. You don't need to memorize them all though, just a quick look at a needle chart or thread size chart can help chose the correct supplies for your project. A good place to check is recognised thread and needle manufacturers as they often have charts on their website which will help you identify the correct product you need, depending on your sewing project.

Why it isn't recommended to attempt repairs if you're not trained:

Joys Arts and crafts sewing machine up and running again. The owner stated this had a timing fault and they had attempted to repair it themselves. It is always more time consuming to repair something when you can't fault trace, considering any previous adjustments and difficult to know what could have been altered. The machine had to be fully dismantled and I checked the hook timing but I discovered that the upper drive was out of time and fixed this, and gave the machine a general service.

Toyota Jeans Sewing machine having problems starting then jamming. There was a few things tweaked during a service, but also found to have damage on the inside of the bobbin case which had let to it having a sharp bur, causing the thread to be unable to move around the bobbin.
