Patrice Hughes Beguet is one of seemingly many relatively recent Jura transplants who fled desk jobs in big cities to make their home in this wild, sub-Alpine corner of France. Obviously the characterful local varieties (Savagnin, Trousseau, Poul/Plou-ssard) are a big draw for any aspiring winemaker...

Coastwatch Open Day next Saturday. All welcome.

Eyes along the coast....

Why not come along to the free Folkestone National Coastwatch Station's Open Day?

Perched on the cliffs overlooking Folkestone Harbour near Martello Tower No.3, all are welcome to their open day on Saturday 17th June between 1100 and 1700.

Come and meet the dedicated voluntary team. See what they do and how they operate, get a first hand look at the equipment and how they integrate with and support the RNLI and Coastguard Agency in keeping our coastline safe.

Refreshments will be available and you never know, you might even experience a real life emergency, hopefully not though!

Coming by car? CT19 6PU is what your satnav needs! Ample free parking nearby too.

See you there!

I seem to be getting more hits now that I have handed over to 2 (proper) UK importers than I did when I was on my own, so I thought I would provide an update for visitors... French-only speakers should head for www.hughesbeguet.com

After a few poor harvests, 2015 was for the Jura, and for a good deal of Europe, a splendid year in terms of both quality and quantity. www.lescaves.co.uk has just taken a large order and www.thewinesociety.com may have more stock in due course.

Patrice now has an apprentice, Louis, who is proving invaluable and they have already started to bottle the 2015 vintage in a small way with most of the remaining cuvees to come on stream in early Spring.

In the meantime Caroline, who lunched recently with Oz Clark and Tim Atkin MW, is multi-tasking as vigneronne, translator, school president, mother et al. Bastian spent the summer with a broken arm but has now started cycle races again, but the trophies of last year will be harder to come by as he is now a year younger than most of the others in his group. Next year will be different! Tessa aged 3 1/2 goes to school and like her brother is bilingual and a delightful chatterbox!

My time as an importer is nearly at an end. Happily over the last 3 years or so, sales nationally and internationally have taken off as more have come to appreciate Patrice's wines. As a result, all of his stock is sold or reserved, with waiting lists for the 2014 vintage due to be bottled in about 4 months.

The Wine Society and Caves de Pyrene are now importing into the UK and from time to time may well have stock available for the general public. I will complete my last VAT return on 1 Jan and concentrate on drinking rather than selling!

Patrice talking about his love of wines and describing how he produces his wine. Pretty good English, too!

Glitterati at Jura wine-tasting yesterday:Raymond, Jancis, Tim.....

Yes, Raymond Blanc, Jancis Robinson, Tim Atkin all attended the tasting in Chandos House and judging by the enthusiastic comments on our table, the Jura made its mark. Felt so pleased for son-in-law Patrice after 5 years physical slog, unaided, with his 25,000 vines to hear the positive verdict on his 2011 cuvees, from so many movers and shakers. "Delicious" won hands down!

Thanks to Wink Lorch for organising this great event with splendid attendance and watch out for reaction on the Jura wines over the next few weeks. One attendee is to reduce Burgundy and expand Jura- you heard it here first!
