Inverter Drive Systems

Inverter Drive Systems IDS is one of the UK's largest ABB AVP, Authorised Value Provider. We supply, install, commission, re This is on the old Stanton Staveley iron works site.

Inverter Drive Systems Ltd was founded as an ABB Drives Distributor in 1999 by Blaise Ford, and has grown to be one of the UK's largest ABB AVP, Authorised Value Provider. We are focused simply on the supply and application of ABB inverters and motors. Inverter Drive Systems Ltd has its origins in Wilson Ford Ltd in Nottingham who, under the guidance of Blaise Ford, started as an ABB inverter dis

tributor in 1994. In 1999, IDS was established in Wilford, Nottingham where the company flourished. In 2010, IDS moved into a new industrial unit on Quarry Hill Industrial Estate near Ilkeston, Derbyshire. We have a loyal team, with five of the team originating from the old Wilson Ford days. Nowadays we are 19 strong comprising 7 installation / service engineers, 4 in technical sales and 4 who run the business in the office. Inverters can be a technical product so we offer our customers genuine 24/7 support on technical issues, stock access and breakdowns. We pride ourselves in applying our knowledge and experience of inverters to our customers’ applications to save energy, improve systems or reduce wear and tear. We carry out free site surveys to identify inverter applications, quantify the potential savings, recommend solutions including the control systems and give a turnkey installation price. This report shows the savings you will make, and the time it will take to pay back the capital spent.

A Variable Speed Drive might cost a few thousand pounds.

An hour of unplanned downtime could cost significantly more.

When evaluating drives, it's easy to compare purchase prices. What's often overlooked is the value of support, technical expertise, stock availability and rapid response when things don't go to plan.

The cheapest option on day one isn't always the lowest-cost option over the lifetime of the equipment.

Did you know that making a motor quieter isn't always the most efficient option?

Increasing a Variable Speed Drive's switching frequency can significantly reduce audible motor noise, but it also increases switching losses and heat within the drive.

Like many engineering decisions, it's about finding the right balance.

Our latest article explains the relationship between switching frequency, motor noise and overall drive performance.

How much of the potential of Variable Speed Drive technology are you using?
Energy efficiency may be one of the best-known benefits of VSDs, but drive technology can solve a much wider range of engineering challenges.
Join IDS Managing Director Matt Handley for our upcoming webinar:
Novel Uses of Variable Speed Drives for the Water Industry
Matt will share some of the innovative ways IDS has used drive technology on non-standard applications, including:
• Parallel pump control
• Sludge pumping
• Archimedean screws
• W**d screen cleaners
• Control of transient pressure spikes in the main
• Lesser-known inverter benefits
If you work with motor-driven applications in the water industry, this is an opportunity to see how Variable Speed Drives can be applied beyond their more familiar uses.

With VSDs You Don’t Always Get What You Pay For - Sometimes You Get More
When choosing a Variable Speed Drive, the purchase price is only part of the story.
What happens when a drive fails unexpectedly? How quickly can you access support? Is replacement equipment available? Who can help diagnose and resolve problems when they occur?
In many applications, downtime, support and lifecycle costs can have a far greater impact on operational performance than the difference between two initial purchase prices.
Our latest article explores why looking beyond the price tag can help deliver better long-term value.

Are you controlling the process, or simply restricting the output?
Traditionally, a pump might use a valve to reduce flow, or a fan might use dampers to restrict airflow.
The process changes, but the motor can continue running at full speed.
A Variable Speed Drive takes a different approach. It controls the speed of the motor itself, allowing it to respond to the demands of the application.
When demand falls, the motor slows down. When demand increases, it speeds up.
That can mean better process control, lower energy consumption and less unnecessary mechanical wear.
Find out more about what a Variable Speed Drive does and why controlling the motor can be more efficient than restricting its output.

One of the biggest misconceptions about motor efficiency is that it starts and ends with the motor.
In reality, the best results are often achieved when the motor, drive and application are considered as a complete system.
This is particularly true for modern high-efficiency technologies such as SynRM, which are designed to work in combination with Variable Speed Drives to optimise performance and reduce energy consumption.
Discover how motor efficiency standards are evolving and why system thinking matters.

Variable Speed Drives save energy. We all know that.
But that's far from the only reason to use them.
What about sludge pumping? Archimedean screws? W**d screen cleaners? Controlling transient pressure spikes in the main?
At IDS, we've applied Variable Speed Drive technology to a number of unusual and non-standard applications within the water industry.
In our next webinar, IDS Managing Director Matt Handley will take a closer look at some of these applications and the problems drive technology has helped to solve.
He'll also explore lesser-known VSD benefits including low volt drop, anti-rag functionality, unity power factor and smooth starts.

Pumps. Fans. HVAC. Compressors. Conveyors. Mixers. Cooling towers.
Different applications, but they have something important in common.
If the motor doesn't need to operate at full speed all the time, there may be an opportunity to improve efficiency by matching motor speed to changing demand.
Variable Speed Drives can help reduce unnecessary energy consumption, improve process control and reduce mechanical wear across a wide range of industrial applications.
Our latest guide looks at what Variable Speed Drives do, which applications can benefit most and why selecting the right drive for the job matters.

A Variable Speed Drive isn't simply about making a motor run slower.
It's about making the process smarter.
By controlling the frequency and voltage supplied to an electric motor, a VSD allows motor speed to increase or decrease in line with the demands of the application.
The potential benefits go beyond energy savings.
Better process control. Smoother starting and stopping. Reduced mechanical stress. Lower maintenance requirements. Longer equipment life.
But selecting the right Variable Speed Drive involves more than matching a drive to the motor's power rating. The application, operating environment and control requirements all matter.
Our latest guide takes a detailed look at what Variable Speed Drives do, where they can deliver the greatest benefits and why correct specification matters.
