Here's an interesting (and disappointing) fact. ScotRail trains currently don't provide access to first class for wheelchair users. I can't even move from standard to first class as the space between seats prevents this.

"First Class areas don't have spaces for wheelchair users and there's no wheelchair access to accessible toilets from First Class. To travel in First Class, wheelchair users would need to be able to transfer to a seat." - ScotRail website

I know they're open to feedback which is something I very much appreciate, but this doesn't feel fair. Not likely gaining much more of an experience I expect, but still.

I'm not sure the public realise that manoeuvring a wheelchair between carriages on most trains is next to impossible. This became all too real during an interaction with an aggressive passenger, who was later charged with two separate counts of hate crime.

The staff on the train where this happened were brilliant, but I had to make my way to the next car
by using the walls to support me as reporting him via the help point, when he was in earshot didn't feel safe.

If I wasn't able to do that, I'd have sat anxious for most of the journey.

- Point of clarity, not all ScotRail Trains have first class but if even one does, and access isn't equal, I stand by the above.

Should respirators become the default in healthcare?

A new paper, signed by more than 2,300 healthcare professionals, scientists and patient advocates, calls on the World Health Organization to recommend respirators (such as FFP2, FFP3 and N95) as the default form of respiratory protection in healthcare.

The authors argue that:
🫁 Surgical masks do not provide adequate protection against airborne pathogens.
🏥 Healthcare workers and patients deserve evidence-based protection.
🌍 WHO guidance should reflect current scientific understanding of airborne transmission.

The paper also recommends improved infection prevention guidance, wider access to respirators, better education on airborne transmission and greater investment in ventilation and other engineering controls.

For healthcare workers living with Long Covid, preventing further infections is essential. Protecting healthcare workers also protects patients.

4 years now I've been searching for safe swim instructions for my kids, following a COVID infection in 2022 that came from one singular visit to the leisure centre that ended up making my children so ill that they could no longer attend school and ended up in hospital.

It seems that there are several provisions for working with autistic people (that's great! We're an autistic family!), and for those with mobility issues, etc. But where are the safe swim instruction options for immunocompromised families? E.g., 'first-of-the-morning' lessons with masked instructors and testing beforehand? Why has it just been presumed that children who are vulnerable in this way are not worth the 'investment' to protect - even if these measures ultimately protect the greater community as well?
