Highland Construction Training Group

Highland Construction Training Group Our aim is to provide a central resource about our training courses!

The Highland Construction Training Group was formed in 2002 and has since been successfully delivering training to construction companies based throughout the Highlands. Courses are delivered throughout the area at venues including Elgin, Dingwall, Beauly, Inverness, Fort William, Skye and Brora’

The group is committed to promoting training activity to the construction industry and its wider memb

ership is open to all construction employers and associated industries who wish to participate in training. The group is committed to training in the following areas: Health & Safety, Apprenticeships, Craft Trades & Operatives and Management & Supervisory. The group also encourages member companies to highlight any individual training needs as this may result in the development of new training courses, we are also interested in promoting new training initiatives. The group is always looking to increase the provision of courses in the area and is committed every year to maintain 1,000 or more training days. The group recognises the value of industry/education links and is keen to become more involved. Group members are committed to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), Construction Plant Competency Scheme (CPCS) and Scaffolding (CISRS) record schemes and are involved in the On Site Assessment & Training Programme with various training providers from the Highland area. There is now training provision available for on site assessment of SVQ Levels 3 and 4 in Construction Site Supervision and Management in the Highland area.

Free SHAD Event – Michael’s Story | Wednesday 24 June 2026

We are pleased to invite you and your colleagues to attend a free SHAD event on Wednesday 24 June 2026, featuring Michael’s Story – a powerful 40 minute presentation that leaves a lasting impact. Michael’s death followed an electrical incident, but the lessons extend far beyond one industry. This is a hard hitting, thought provoking story that encourages everyone in the room to reflect on their own decisions, behaviours and responsibilities at work.

Two sessions are available on the day:

10.00 am – Managers and Supervisors
1.00 pm – Operatives and Apprentices

Venue: Balloch Culloden Baptist Church, Wellside Road, Balloch, Inverness, IV2 7GS
Tea and coffee will be available from 20 minutes before each session.

Please use the Microsoft Forms link below to register delegates: SHAD Event Registration – Michael’s Story – Fill in form

This is the second to last SHAD event being delivered by HCTG, and we would very much like to see a strong turnout from our member companies. Please consider sending delegates along to what promises to be a meaningful and memorable session.

Following our AGM on 2nd April 2026, we can confirm HCTG will be winding down on 31st August 2026.

Why this AGM matters

Highland Construction Training Group has supported construction employers across the Highlands for many years by providing access to funded, locally delivered training.

However, we are now operating in a changing landscape.

CITB has confirmed that Training Group core funding will end in March 2026, and recent changes to Short Duration Grant and Skills and Training Fund arrangements have altered how training is funded and accessed by employers.

These changes do not mean training is no longer needed — but they do mean that training groups must carefully review how they can continue to operate and whether they remain the best option for their members going forward.

As a result, the main purpose of this year’s AGM will be to have an open and honest discussion with members to decide whether Highland Construction Training Group continues to be a valuable, sustainable, and member-led training option in the future.

Similar groups elsewhere have already taken the decision to wind down. We believe it is important that any decision about the future of HCTG is shaped by its members.

Your attendance is strongly requested to consider and discuss the options available. We need to know the wishes and desires of our members on this critical issue – the future of the training group is in your hands!!

Had a good chat with Pete today, who is National Chair of the CITB Training Groups - who connect up apprentices with apprenticeship opportunities in the construction and allied sectors. Sadly, CITB have chosen to end the groups, which sounds like it will have a negative impact on the trade - and on people seeking out apprenticeships.

I will be writing to CITB, to DWP who are the sponsor department, and will apply for a debate in Parliament on the issue to make sure it gets a good hearing.

"Mental health is an important part of our overall wellbeing, yet there is still a lack of awareness and consideration surrounding it. 1 in 6 workers in the UK experience mental health problems, but due to stigma, they don't feel comfortable to talk about it. Training Mental Health First Aiders can be hugely beneficial to employers.
