In case you missed our last post…👀

Emma is away on holiday until 26 October, and we reckon she’s not doing too badly for a view!!

But don’t worry, it’s business as usual at Balance & Thrive. Emails are still being monitored, the team is keeping things moving and all usual work is continuing as normal.

Emma is taking a well-earned holiday from 10–26 October and will be out of the office during this time.

Don’t worry though, it’s business as usual at Balance & Thrive.

Emails will still be monitored, the team will be keeping things moving and all usual work will continue as normal.

If HMRC is getting in touch, it’s probably time to stop putting MTD off.

HMRC is continuing to contact sole traders and landlords who are expected to move to Making Tax Digital, and the numbers show that plenty of people are still not fully set up.

We’ve said it before, but MTD isn’t just about downloading some software and hoping for the best.

You need to know whether you’re affected, have compatible software in place, understand the new reporting requirements and make sure your records are being kept properly.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out at the last minute.

If MTD applies to you, getting set up properly now is going to make life considerably easier when those deadlines start coming around.

A little bit of good news for small businesses…

If you’re thinking about taking on a young apprentice, there’s now a £2,000 boost available to small and medium-sized businesses for each new young apprentice they take on.

The payment is designed to help with the cost of bringing young people into the workplace, and employers don’t need to make a separate application for it.

For small businesses, anything that helps make taking on and training new staff a little more manageable has to be a good thing.

And, as always, if you’re taking on your first employee or expanding your team, there’s a bit more to it than simply adding someone to the payroll. Contracts, National Minimum Wage, pension duties, payroll and keeping everything compliant all need to be considered too.

Definitely one worth knowing about if you’re thinking about growing your team.

WE’RE FINALISTS! 🎉

We’re absolutely delighted to share that Balance & Thrive Bookkeeping Ltd is a finalist for New Practice of the Year at the LUCA Bookkeepers Awards 2026!

A pretty big deal, and one we’re incredibly proud of.

The last year has brought a lot of change for us. A growing team, new services, new systems, lots of learning, plenty of hard work and, of course, more clients joining the Balance & Thrive family.

So to have all of that recognised by an independent panel of judges feels pretty special.

Will we bring home a LUCA? Who knows…For now, we’re just going to enjoy being a finalist! 🥂

A wee thank you to our clients…

We know we’ve asked a lot from you lately.

New system. New portal. New processes. And more requests for ID and proof of address than anyone probably needed in their inbox.

Thank you for bearing with us, replying to the emails, uploading your documents and generally going along with our many requests while we’ve got everything up and running.

It’s all about making things more secure, organised and straightforward in the long run, but we know it’s not always exciting when yet another email lands asking for something.

We really do appreciate your patience and support. And Kay promises she’ll try not to send another ID reminder…for at least a few days. 🤣

MTD is firmly here, but the numbers suggest a lot of people still aren’t ready.

Official figures from HMRC show that just 436,000 sole traders and landlords successfully submitted their updates, meaning nearly half of those required to comply didn’t make it through the process.

That’s a pretty significant number. And it highlights something we’ve been saying for a while: MTD isn’t just about having accounting software.

It’s about being set up properly, knowing what you need to submit, keeping your records up to date and understanding how the new process actually works.

If you’re a sole trader or landlord who falls within the next MTD threshold, now is the time to get organised.

Don’t leave it until the deadline is looming.
