⚽ If a footballer plays a match in Mexico, should Mexico be allowed to tax part of the income they earn from playing there?

Under many international tax treaties, the answer would normally be yes. But Mexico has provided wide-ranging tax exemptions for the World Cup, helping to avoid a situation where hundreds of players and officials would have to deal with Mexican tax filings for a few weeks' work.

However, just because Mexico gives up its taxing rights doesn't mean the income is tax-free, as Andrew explains.

🏆 The 2026 World Cup kicks off tomorrow, and like many offices around the country, we've already got a sweepstake running and plenty of opinions on who'll be lifting the trophy.

While everyone else is focusing on the football, our Head of Tax Andrew Diver has decided to look a little deeper.

Throughout the tournament, Andrew will be sharing his score predictions alongside some fascinating insights into the tax systems, quirks and rules of the nations taking part.

Some are surprising, some are unusual, and a few might even make the UK tax system look straightforward.

Follow Andrew's from tomorrow as the tournament gets underway!

And before the first ball is kicked... who are you backing to win it? ⚽

Last week, we said farewell to Sarah Beeton as she retired after an incredible 37 years with Beatons.

Over nearly four decades, Sarah has been a familiar face to colleagues and clients alike, supporting businesses through countless milestones, challenges and successes. In many cases, she has worked with clients since the inception of their businesses, building lasting relationships and earning the trust and respect of everyone she has worked with.

On Friday, the team came together at the Salthouse Harbour Hotel to celebrate Sarah's career and thank her for everything she has contributed to the firm over the years.

Sarah received many gifts and messages from colleagues and clients, reflecting the impact she has had on so many people throughout her career.

While retirement is very well deserved, Sarah will be greatly missed by us all. Thankfully, long service is something we are fortunate to see a lot of here, but even by our standards, 37 years is a remarkable achievement.

Thank you, Sarah, for your dedication, friendship and contribution to Beatons. We wish you a long, happy and well-earned retirement.

🤦 Ever feel like there are more tax rules, more reporting requirements and more things to keep track of than there used to be?

You're probably not imagining it.

New figures show HMRC is recovering significantly more tax through investigations into small businesses and individuals than it was a year ago.

For many business owners, keeping up with an increasingly complicated system while also running a business can be a challenge.

That's why accurate records, good processes and timely advice are more important than ever.

After all, prevention is usually much less expensive than correction.

The Chancellor's new temporary 5% VAT rate comes into force on June 25 and will run until September 1.

While the change is designed to help families with the cost of days out and entertainment over the summer, it could create some unexpected challenges for the businesses affected.

The reduced rate applies to certain children's meals, family attraction tickets, and cinema and theatre admissions – but not every similar product or ticket will qualify.

For many businesses, that means:
✅ reviewing which sales qualify
✅ updating till and accounting systems
✅ training staff
✅ checking how advance bookings should be treated
✅ keeping clear records in case HMRC asks questions later

For smaller attractions, hospitality businesses and leisure operators, this could mean a significant amount of work for a 69-day change.

And then on September 2, many of those changes will need reversing again.

If your business could be affected, now is a good time to review how the new rules apply to you.

In case you missed it, as of April 6 directors who hold shares in their own close company must provide additional information on their Self Assessment tax return, including:

✔️ their company’s registration number
✔️ their highest shareholding percentage during the tax year
✔️ the total dividends received

These disclosures are required even if no dividend tax is due.

HMRC says around 900,000 directors could be affected, and failure to provide the information can result in a fixed £60 penalty.

It's a change that could easily be missed without careful record keeping and accurate tax reporting.

📣 Nearly half of UK adults are not saving into a pension, according to a recent report from the government-backed Pensions Commission.

The report found that many of those not saving are employed, with Gen X identified as being particularly at risk of under-saving for retirement.

Did you know eligible employers can reduce their National Insurance bill by up to £10,500 per year through Employment Allowance?

It’s a valuable relief that many businesses may qualify for, but not everyone realises they’re eligible.

Eligibility depends on factors such as:
▪️ the structure of your business
▪️ how many employees you have
▪️ whether you’re part of a group company

If you’re unsure whether your business can claim it, we would be happy to help you review your position.

📣 The Chancellor has announced an increase to the approved tax-free mileage rate for cars and vans rising from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles.

The change is being backdated to 6 April 2026 and is the first increase in 15 years.

This means that if you use your own car for work, you may now be able to receive more mileage payments tax and National Insurance free.

And if your employer pays less than 55p per mile, you could potentially claim tax relief on the difference.

Other measures announced included:
🚛 a 12-month road tax holiday for HGVs
🚜 a temporary cut to red diesel duty for farmers and rail freight

A useful update for many businesses and employees affected by rising travel and transport costs.
