At Your Business Matters groups, I see lots of successful project collaborations between members. Here are a few things I've noticed that help collaborations go smoothly:

1. Getting clear on roles. Decide who owns which part of the project so there's no confusion later.

2. Agree how to communicate. Set how often you'll check in and how decisions will be made.

3. Stay aligned with each other. The client should feel like they're working with one team, not two businesses running in parallel.

4. Sort out the practical details early. Invoicing, deadlines and how you'll talk about the collaboration publicly should all be agreed before the work starts.

A great planning conversation covering these types of things can help a project run smoothly and deliver a positive client experience.

Is there anything else you do to kickstart a collaboration and help things run smoothly?

When you walk into a networking event, are you just thinking about who could be interested in your services?

If that’s where your thinking is, you’re most likely not getting the results you want from networking.

Successful networkers think about follow-ups - who in the room could help others in their network? Who could they collaborate with? What kind of connections are they looking for?

At the risk of giving myself a catchphrase (my members know it’s something I’m so passionate about) – don’t try to sell to the room.

Focus on meeting people who can help you grow your business whether that’s through knowledge sharing, partnerships or maybe referrals. Give as much as you hope to gain from the group. That’s effective networking.

If you want to come and visit a networking group that’s focused on sharing knowledge and building long-term, strategic connections, DM me to find out more Your Business Matters networking events in your area.

New to networking? One of the most common questions I get asked is which type of group to start with and the honest answer is: it depends on you.

If you like knowing what to expect, a chaired meeting with a familiar agenda will feel comfortable and help you really get to know people. If you enjoy the unpredictability of meeting anyone and everyone, a larger, open format might suit you better.

Membership-style, one-per-profession groups are excellent for building long-term, collaborative relationships that can have a hugely positive impact on your business. Open networks, where you might sit next to a direct competitor, can help you sharpen how you talk about what makes you different.

My advice is to go for a mix if you can with one structured, but relaxed networking group alongside a drop-in one (as long as you're not spreading yourself too thin).

If you'd like to try a membership-style group for yourself, come along and visit us as a visitor. DM me to find out more about Your Business Matters events in your area.

Being a great networker at an event is only a small part of what makes networking successful. What happens after the meeting is just as important.

It’s vital to follow up and connect between meetings. If someone asks for a 121, book it. If they show interest in what you do, send them what they need without chasing. If you said you'd introduce them to a contact, follow through.

Doing what you said you would and putting effort into the relationship builds more trust than hoping your one-minute pitch at the networking event will do all the heavy lifting.

What's your approach to following up after a networking event?

Deciding whether to commit to a networking group after one visit is a big decision, but focusing only on how many leads you got is the wrong thing to base it on.

Instead, notice the culture of the group. Do members seem happy to help each other? Are they listening to each other or just waiting for their turn to speak? Is there a balance of structured sections and time for casual conversation? Can you picture yourself still being part of the group in a year?

Leads and referrals come with time, once trust has been built. What you're really assessing on a first visit is whether the people and the culture are the right environment for you to grow.

If you want to experience that type of group for yourself, come along to a Your Business Matters group as a visitor. DM me to find out more.

"I don't have time to network, I need to focus on growing my business."

This is something I hear and it usually just means they haven't found the right networking group yet. Once they do, they experience just how much business growth can be achieved in the right group.

When you're stretched thin, taking time out for networking can feel like a luxury you can't afford. But the businesses that get the most out of networking tend to be the ones that don’t treat it as a nice-to-have but as part of how they grow, the same way they'd treat marketing or sales.

No networking group can promise you sales and you should be wary of any that do. The right group can offer the chance to build relationships that lead to referrals, collaborations and knowledge you wouldn't have access to otherwise.

If that sounds like what you're after, come and visit a Your Business Matters group. DM me to find one near you.
