Do you believe you’re too introverted for networking?

The image a lot of people have of networking - working a room, pitching confidently to strangers, talking to as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time, isn't what great networking actually looks like. And it's not what happens in our groups.

Successful networkers ask good questions and listen to the answers. They follow up after a meeting and remember what someone mentioned last month and check in to see how it went.

Those are qualities that come naturally to a lot of people who describe themselves as introverted. And in a networking group built around relationship building rather than cold pitching, they're the qualities that our successful networkers have.

If you want to come and visit a group where being yourself is always enough, DM me to find out more about Your Business Matters events in your area.

If you've tried networking before and it didn't work, I completely understand why you'd be reluctant to try again.

But before you write it off entirely, it's worth asking yourself, was it networking that didn't work, or was it just that particular group?

The culture that the organiser and groups have built, the calibre of members they've attracted, the structure of the meetings and the support between them, all make a huge difference to what you get out of it.

A group where the atmosphere feels transactional or you're left to figure things out on your own is a very different experience to one where members are invested in each other. Bad networking experiences are unfortunately more common than they should be. But they say more about that particular group than they do about networking itself.

If you've been put off by a previous experience, we'd love to show you what it looks like when it's done properly. DM me to find out more about Your Business Matters events in your area.

Here’s how to know if a networking group is right for you after a first visit.

Notice how you felt on the way home.

Did you leave feeling like you could see yourself there longer term? Was the atmosphere welcoming and supportive? Did the members seem like the kind of business owners you'd want in your corner?

That gut feeling after a first visit is more important than most people give it credit for. You can analyse the commitment and the membership fee as much as you like. But don't ignore how it felt to be there as part of the group. Referrals and collaborations come in time, but when you’re a visitor, all you need to assess is whether it’s somewhere you think you can grow as a business owner.

What made you decide to commit to the networking group you're currently part of?

Social media and networking do two completely different jobs for your business. The mistake is treating them as alternatives to each other.

Social media builds reach and brand awareness. It puts you in front of people who would never otherwise come across you and keeps you visible to a wide audience. But being visible doesn't automatically build trust (which is what you need when someone puts their reputation on the line to refer you).

Trust building is what networking is great for. Consistent attendance, giving back to your fellow members and clearly articulating the difference you make is what makes someone think of you when the right opportunity comes up. When that trust is built over months and years, referrals are warmer and far more likely to convert.

How do you balance building your network online versus in person? I'd love to hear in the comments.

There's a difference between having a network and having people who actively support your success.

Most of us accumulate contacts over the years of people we've crossed paths with or connected with online. But there's something quite different about being part of a networking group where people flag opportunities because they understood what you do on a deep level and want to see you succeed.

That's what the right networking group delivers over time. A room full of business owners who are paying attention to your business and rooting for it. People who show up for you because the culture of the group has made that investment in each other a normal thing to do.

What's one way a fellow networking member has supported your business that you didn't expect?
