The latest edition of Gu looks at how organisations have responded to the introduction of IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4, which brought changes to the requirements for tightness testing and purging on smaller gas installations.

For Laura Jefferies, Head of SMARTester at Steve Vick, the changes meant adapting the company’s platforms to help those working in the industry meet the revised requirements. Working with customers and industry specialists, the team developed a digital platform designed to support the new processes while maintaining usability, compliance and a complete audit trail.

Net Zero - Nightmare, Nirvana or Much Ado About Nothing? Jonathan Kane, CEO of KANE, looks at the scale of the challenge facing the UK’s existing housing stock, and the changing skills needed across the heating sector.

The feature considers the current uptake of heat pumps, the scale of the Government’s ambitions and the need for engineers to develop skills across different technologies while continuing to support existing heating systems.

With the energy market evolving, the article explores how developing additional skills could enable engineers to work across gas, oil, low-carbon and electrical technologies rather than treating the transition as a simple switch from one technology to another.

🌍 World Standards Day: 14 August

IGEM standards support safety, consistency and good engineering practice across the gas industry, providing recognised requirements and guidance that professionals can rely on.

For more than 160 years, IGEM has developed and shared technical knowledge, helping shape best practice in areas including transmission, distribution, utilisation, measurement and safety.

But standards are more than documents. They are developed through collaboration, drawing on the expertise and experience of professionals across the industry to reflect evolving technologies, challenges and best practice.

This World Standards Day, we recognise everyone who contributes to developing, reviewing and applying the standards that help support a safe and sustainable gas industry.

Could smart technology make gas networks safer, more resilient and more efficient?

This month's Gi is all about smart technology; looking at how the AI revolution is already delivering practical benefits across the gas industry.

Ian Parkinson, of Armstrong Industrial, explores how remote telemetry and intelligent automation can help operators identify emerging issues, reduce unnecessary site visits and make better use of skilled engineering resources.

The feature also looks at how digitalisation can reduce travel-related emissions and extend the value of existing infrastructure, showing how smart technology can improve existing assets without necessarily replacing them.

The Autumn edition of Gu looks at the impact of the Government’s Future Homes Standard which comes into effect on 24th March 2027.

IGEM Policy Manager Sayda Lees-Manning explores how the standard will change the way homes are built and heated, while raising wider questions around infrastructure, future gas demand and workforce development.

As heating technologies diversify, engineers will increasingly need knowledge across areas including heat pumps, hybrid systems, building fabric, ventilation, smart controls, energy management and heat networks.
