There's a common assumption that a smart home has to look like one, with visible panels, cables and screens competing for attention with the interior you've worked so hard on. In our experience, it's quite the opposite.

After 27 years of designing and installing smart home systems, we've learnt that the best results come when design and technology are planned together from day one. Working closely with architects, interior designers and our design partners at House of Carvetii, we make sure every speaker, screen and lighting scene is considered as part of the room itself, so the technology is there when you need it and quietly out of the way when you don't.

The result is a home that looks beautiful and runs beautifully, for years rather than months.

It's easy to forget just how far lighting has come, especially when the system you already have still switches on the way it always has.

The trouble is what sits behind it, a lot of homes are still running lighting control from twenty or so years ago, and many of those original parts simply aren't manufactured any more, so the day one module gives up can turn into a far bigger job than anyone expected. A proper upgrade isn't only about richer scenes and smoother dimming, though you'll certainly notice those, it's about knowing the system can be maintained and cared for properly for years ahead.

One year of House of Carvetii, and what a way to mark it.

To celebrate our first year, we brought people together for an evening that showed exactly what this space is for.

The most memorable part was the generosity in the room, between the silent auction and the raffle, we raised £1,900 for North West Air Ambulance, a charity that does extraordinary work across our region every single day.

Thank you to everyone who came, supported the cause and made the evening what it was. If you have not visited House of Carvetii yet, we would love to welcome you in.

When daylight goes, most gardens simply vanish into the dark, and that always feels like such a waste of a beautiful space.

With exterior lighting that has been properly considered, the opposite happens. As dusk settles in, the lighting gradually takes over and picks out the trees, the pathways and the lines of the house, so the garden holds onto its atmosphere well into the night. The trick is restraint, warm and gentle rather than bright and floodlit, so the whole thing feels natural rather than staged.

A garden at dusk really is something special when it's lit with care.
