Most people who carry meningococcal bacteria never become ill.

Around 1 in 10 people carry meningococcal bacteria in the back of their throat at any one time. This is known as carriage and, in most cases, it’s harmless.

Only occasionally do the bacteria overcome the body’s defences and cause meningitis or septicaemia.

Understanding how meningitis can develop and spread is one part of understanding the disease.
