They’re not just compact for site access, they’re also compact when they’re fully set up.

The compactness speaks for itself…

👉 The Maeda spider cranes prove that lifting power doesn’t need a big footprint. They work confidently in tight, restricted spaces where traditional cranes simply can’t operate.

Yet still delivering precision when it matters most.

🔹 Max lifting capacities from 1.72t up to 8.09t
🔹 Tracked access
🔹 Models that can fit through standard doorways
🔹 Negative reach capabilities
🔹 Enhanced safety including tilt sensors

As architects continue to think bigger, installers need equipment that can do the same.💡

With glass having become a defining element of modern architecture, its design, scale, and form have evolved alongside it. No longer used solely for natural light, glass now serves to frame views and connect the indoors to out.

👉 In this project, the Winlet 1000 glazing robot was selected to install the floor to ceiling glazing at this property which will look onto the vast landscape opposite.

Due to the size and weight of the glass, the 1 tonne lifting capacity glazing robot became the best option, reducing the manual handling and improving safety on site. Its usability and operation made sure the project stayed on schedule.

🔹 2.6m reach
🔹 Low ground pressure
🔹 Gyroscopic controls
🔹 Remote control operation
🔹 180° tilt & rotation

With glass now becoming the architecture itself, the means of handling, manoeuvring, and installing needs to develop too.

When you’re working hundreds of feet above London installing glazed facades, precision is everything.

A look back at our Maeda MC305 spider crane at work, lifting and positioning curtain walling on a landmark skyscraper project in the capital.

Why was the MC305 mini crane selected?

🔹 Powerful lifting capacity vs compact size
🔹 Enhanced safety including tilt sensors
🔹 Negative reach capabilities
🔹 Operated as sit-on or wireless remote control
🔹 Variable outriggers

Despite its compact footprint, the MC305 delivers the power, reach, and pinpoint accuracy needed to tackle complex lifting operations in some of the most challenging construction environments.

🎥 Take a look at the Maeda MC305 in its natural habitat.

Hird are proud to have supported The Big Malarkey Festival by donating the use of one of our Genie Z45/25J RT boom lifts for the event, which is held in a Hull park.

Organised by Hull Libraries, the festival celebrates children’s literature, giving young readers the opportunity to meet with writers, illustrators, poets, and more.

With a working height of 15.86m, the Genie Z45/25J RT is helping the festival team carry out the setup and installation of the event, and elevate safety on site.

🌱 Plus its rough terrain capabilities make it perfectly suited to working on the park’s grassed areas.

At Hird, we relish in supporting our local communities, no matter what depot. And we’re thrilled to have played a part in this year’s festival.

Throwback Thursday 🔙

In May last year we were proud to support the DIY SOS team again, this time with the supply of a Genie Z45RT boom lift.

The 15.86m cherry picker allowed operatives to install structural steelwork which would then later (well in just a couple of days) become the new youth club.

Giving the team safe access to work at height meant the project could run smoother and more efficiently. A huge part of what makes DIY SOS and their short turnaround times.

And it wasn’t the first time we’ve worked alongside DIY SOS, back in 2018 we were pleased to have supported the construction of two buildings in North Kensington for the affected community following Grenfell.

We supplied a range of spider cranes, SLAs, vacuum lifters, and a counterbalance floor crane to help get the entire project delivered in just 96 days.

Take a closer look at how Hird supports communities on our website’s news page.

The glass industry has evolved but has your installation method? 💡

As glass continues to evolve, glazing panels are getting larger, designs are becoming more ambitious, and project deadlines are tighter than ever. Evidently, the way we install glass needs to evolve too.

Tackling installations with traditional methods causes strain on both teams and materials, creating risks onsite and impacting efficiency.

👉 That's where Winlet glazing robots make the difference.

Designed for the handling and installation of glass and a range of other materials, the glazing robots are designed to lift, manoeuvre, position, and install glass with precision and control.

By reducing manual handling, improving installation accuracy, and providing access on uneven ground or other challenging areas, Winlet glazing robots help teams work smarter whilst keeping glass secure and undamaged.

Whether you’re looking for a compact solution for indoor sites, or a powerful machine capable of handling large glass panels in demanding locations, there’s a Winlet model to match the task.

✔ Safer lifting
✔ Faster installations
✔ Reduced labour requirements
✔ Greater installation accuracy
✔ Improved efficiency

What does it take to complete major façade work while a hotel remains fully operational?

Following its recent extension, this hotel based in a northern city has been reclad with minimal disruption to guests and staff.

Hird supplied two Maeda MC815 spider cranes, and two Genie Z80/60 boom lifts, along with experienced operators to make the project run smoothly.

The combination of our largest Maeda mini crane, and largest cherry picker in our fleet proved a perfect fit. Providing brilliant reach which allowed high-level work to be carried out safely and efficiently across the hotel’s façade. And most importantly keeping the project on schedule whilst the hotel remained operational.

Between both machinery, our Maeda spider cranes provided a lifting capacity of 8.09t x 2.4m, and a lifting height of 19.6m x 2,390kg. With the cherry pickers offering a 25.8m working height.

Did you spot our cherry picker on the news last night? 👀⚓️

This Genie boom had its 5 seconds of fame on BBC Look North last night as the feature focused on the current phase of dredging the River Hull.

Our access equipment is playing a role in a major project on the river ahead of the historic Arctic Corsair's arrival this summer by assisting in the clearing of the dry dock area where the vessel will sit.

This isn't the first time Hird has supported the Arctic Corsair restoration project.

North End Shipyard saw our 100t mobile crane, along with our specialist lifting team, reinstall the site’s Scotch Derrick late last year. It became an important milestone in restoring one of Hull’s most iconic maritime landmarks.

Projects like this demonstrate how Hird’s access equipment supports essential infrastructure, restoration and preservation work across the UK.

We're glad to see our machine supporting an important chapter in Hull's maritime heritage.
