Coastal High Streets need tougher sign cabinets

Salt air, driving rain, and constant UV exposure will find every weakness in a poorly built sign cabinet within a season or two.

Lightboxes built for coastal locations need a PVC printed skin that won't crack or fade when it's facing the elements day after day. The frame matters just as much: aluminium construction resists corrosion in ways cheaper materials simply won't.

Day or night visibility is the whole point of an illuminated sign cabinet, but that only works long-term if the cabinet is genuinely built for external conditions, not just rated for them on paper.

Before you order: what to actually ask your signage supplier

Not all trade signage suppliers work the same way, and the gaps show up after the order's placed.

Start with turnaround. Ask exactly how a quote is worked out and how long it takes. Ours comes back within 8 hours because one team reviews the brief and specs it properly first time, rather than passing it round.

Ask who's making the product. If it's outsourced or split across sites, quality control gets harder to guarantee. Everything at Brownings happens under one roof at our Hull facility, so nothing leaves the floor without proper checks.

Ask what happens once production starts. You should have a named project manager tracking your job from quote through to production notes and delivery, not a generic order number.

Getting even illumination across a long fascia or sign run isn't down to luck, it's down to correct specification before the order goes in.

Brownings builds trough lights made to length so there's no cutting or splicing on site, with lights over 4m built in sections. Everything arrives fully built up in sections, ready to fit straight into your run.

Output matters as much as length. We work to three illumination ranges: up to 2m, 2m to 4m, and over 4m, so brightness stays consistent whether it's a small fascia or a long High Street frontage.

Finish counts too. Powder-coated options can be discussed for the project, so the trough matches the sign rather than standing out for the wrong reasons.

Most lightbox production delays trace back to the same handful of spec errors, and they're easy to catch before an order goes in.

Face material mismatches cause real headaches. If the print spec doesn't match the intended finish (gloss versus matte, single versus double-sided), production has to stop and query it, which costs days.

Depth and profile confusion is another common one. Lightbox cabinets come in different depths for a reason: get the depth wrong for the LED configuration you need, and the illumination won't be even across the face.

Missing or vague dimensions hold things up too. Height, width, and depth need to be exact, in millimetres, confirmed before the job is booked into production, not estimated on site later.

Why lightbox LEDs fail early (and how to spec around it)

Most early LED failures in lightboxes come down to heat, not the LEDs themselves.

When modules are packed too closely or the cabinet has poor ventilation, heat builds up inside the box and shortens the life of the diodes fast. A driver that's undersized or mismatched to the LED load will also wear out well before the sign does, taking the lighting with it.

Moisture ingress is another common culprit on external units. Seals that aren't properly rated for outdoor conditions let condensation build up inside the cabinet, which corrodes connections over time.

The fix starts at the spec stage: correct driver sizing for the LED run, proper module spacing for airflow, and IP-rated seals suited to the site conditions. Get that right before manufacture and you avoid callbacks months down the line.
