Hedge renovation time!

This massive laurel hedge was way too overgrown which made it really difficult to maintain. The good thing about laurels is you can prune them right back to a framework and they will regenerate, forming a much lower hedge.

The picture shows only a small part of this job, but you get the idea 👌 🍃 The residents of the nearby houses were over the moon with the result 😄

We recently carried out some pruning on this mature oak to encourage retrenchment — a long-term pruning strategy used to help veteranise older trees 🌳

Rather than simply reducing the tree, retrenchment aims to gradually encourage the crown to become smaller and create features which help biodiversity.

It’s all about working with the tree’s natural biology 👌

Big dead birch tree I distmantle the other week 🌳

Once a tree dies, it loses its natural defences against decay organisms. Fungi, bacteria and insects can then start breaking down the wood, gradually reducing its strength until eventually the tree or individual branches can fail.

Luckily this one had only been dead a year so it was ok to climb up halfway for dismantling, and was removed before it became a bigger problem 👌

This hedge came down by around a foot to make it easier for the customers to keep on top of it going forward. 🌿✂️

It’s all too easy to not trim a hedge right back to where it was previously cut, but that small amount of incremental growth soon adds up over the years which means it will need a proper reduction like this at some point.

Hedge reduction perfection. 👌
