❤️ Meet Claire Hunter, one of our wonderful Ageless Companions! ✨

Hi, I’m Claire! I’m 53 years young, married to Dave, and a proud mum to three grown-up children, Connor, Rachel and Lauren.

After working in healthcare and early years education for many years, I discovered Ageless Companions five years ago when my dad needed support. And boy, do I love it! 🫶

I love the families I work with, and Marilyn and the team have been amazing and so supportive, especially following my dad’s passing this year.

I now care for my mum too, and she has an amazing companion, Jackie, who also supported my dad. Having experienced Ageless Companions from both sides, I know just how invaluable the service is to our family.

I am often paired up with younger people who are neurodivergent, and we have a ball together, going to the cinema, bowling, concerts, outdoor swimming, Go Ape, karaoke, bars, and many more different experiences. 💜

This is so much more than a job, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of Ageless Companions!

When we talk about what we do at Ageless Companions, we usually talk about how we support our clients.

But to be honest, it goes both ways. 😁

Our clients teach and give us SO MUCH that it's hard to put into words. ❤️

We get to meet people we might never have met otherwise, hear about their lives and learn from their experiences.

We hear stories about growing up, raising families, working, travelling, relationships, challenges they've overcome and all the "little" things that have happened along the way.

Or we simply have a good chat and a laugh together. 😊

Every client is different, and every visit brings something new and special.

Of course, our role is to be there for them and make sure they have someone to talk to and spend time with.

But we also get to know some truly interesting people along the way!

So yes, we help our clients.

But they probably don't realise just how much they give us too. ❤️

Loneliness in Scotland: some numbers that might surprise you 😲

We often think of loneliness as something that affects people who live alone.

But the statistics tell a more complicated story.

According to the latest Scottish Household Survey, 20% of adults in Scotland experienced feelings of loneliness in the week before they were surveyed in 2024.

That’s 1 in 5 adults! 😳

And among people aged 75 and over, the figure was 25% - 1 in 4.

And here’s the most interesting bit…

Loneliness isn’t (always) about how often someone sees other people.

In fact, 68% of adults in Scotland said they met with friends, relatives, neighbours or work colleagues at least once a week.

Yet 20% still experienced loneliness!

So loneliness doesn’t only affect people who are alone.

You can be surrounded by lots of people and still feel lonely. 🙏🫶

🎉 7 YEARS OF AGELESS COMPANIONS! 🎉🥳

Today is a very special day because 7 years ago today, Marlyn started Ageless Companions. ❤️

It started with one simple idea, and has grown into something pretty incredible. 😉

Marlyn had spent more than 20 years working in health and social care, supporting people with disabilities and helping them navigate the system.

Then, in 2019, her role changed and she suddenly found herself with very little contact with the people she had spent so many years supporting.

It didn’t feel right.

So she decided to do something about it!

She took her experience, her passion for supporting people and one very simple idea…

People need companionship.

And that’s how Ageless Companions was born. 🥰

The name itself came from Marlyn’s own experience. She realised that when she visited people, she was sometimes the only person they would see that day - or even that week.

Yes, people had carers coming in to help with the things they needed.

But sometimes what they really wanted was someone to sit down, have a chat, go for a walk, or just spend some time together.

And 7 years later, look where that little idea has taken us…

❤️ Countless cups of tea, chats, walks, outings, laughs and memories
❤️ And so many people who now have someone to look forward to seeing

We even made it through a little thing called COVID along the way! 😅

If anything, those difficult years showed just how important companionship really is and how deeply loneliness and isolation can affect people.

Along the way, Marlyn’s had some very special people by her side, including Denise Spence who has been her right-hand woman and an important part of the Ageless Companions journey from the beginning. 😊

Because behind every successful company is a team of people who help make it happen - and we are so lucky to have such an amazing team! 😍🤗

Perhaps the best way to describe what Ageless Companions means comes from one of the people we support, who once said having their companion was better than taking any medication.

Honestly… how do you top that? 😍❤️

So today, we want to say a HUGE happy 7th birthday to Ageless Companions and a massive congratulations to the one and only Marlyn Baxter!

What started as one woman following her heart has grown into making a real difference in people’s lives every single day!

Here’s to the next chapter! 🥂

You don’t have to “need” a companion to enjoy having one. 😍

Some of our clients are perfectly capable of getting on with things themselves.

They’re independent, have their own routines, and see family and friends regularly.

But there might still be one day a week that feels a bit empty.

Maybe Tuesday is the day when nobody usually calls. Maybe they’d love to go for a walk but don’t enjoy walking alone anymore.

Or perhaps they have a list of little jobs they keep putting off because it’s easier when someone is there to help.

And that’s exactly where companionship can help. 😊❤️

It doesn’t have to be about “I can’t manage on my own.”

Maybe you just don’t want to manage on your own.

That’s a very different thing.

Our companions can be there for a regular weekly visit, a walk, a bit of practical help, or an outing, to name but a few.

So if you’ve ever thought, “I don’t really need a companion…”

Ask yourself:

“Would my week be a little better if I had one?”

That answer might surprise you. 😊
