Practical fencing courses happening in North Uist and Lewis this May, with the Scottish Crofting Federation.

Two chances to get hands-on with fencing skills this spring!

We’re running two in-person fencing courses across the islands, designed to give crofters the practical knowledge and confidence to build and maintain their own stock fencing.

Join us in North Uist (Trumisgarry) from Wed 6 – Thu 7 May
Book here: www.tickettailor.com/events/scottishcroftingfederation/2055641

Join us in the Isle of Lewis (Grinneabhat, North Bragar) from Fri 29 – Sat 30 May
Book here: www.tickettailor.com/events/scottishcroftingfederation/2054426

Across both courses, you’ll spend two full days learning alongside experienced fencers, covering everything from ground preparation and materials to stock fencing, rabbit netting, deer deterrents, maintenance, and CAGS requirements.

These are hands-on sessions with plenty of time to get stuck in and ask questions. Lunch and hot drinks are provided each day. Just bring suitable outdoor clothing and a good pair of tough gloves.

Pricing is £100 per place or £65 for young crofters aged 41 and under.

Both courses are eligible for support through the Next Generation Practical Training Fund. If you’re planning to apply, let us know and we can hold a space while your application is assessed.

Places are limited and expected to fill quickly!

Delivered in partnership with the Croft Woodlands Project, with support from the Woodland Trust Scotland and Point and Sandwick Trust

If you’ve been meaning to get your fencing sorted, this is a good place to start!

Come and join us, NFU Scotland - Argyll & the Islands Region, Oban Vets and Numnuts to discuss lamb castration and tail docking options. Open to all. Tomorrow evening, 7.30pm, kilmore hall.

🐑Lamb Castration Open Meeting 🐑
WHEN: Tuesday 31st March 2026 at 7.30pm
WHERE: Kilmore Village Hall, Kilmore, PA34 4XT

All farmers and crofters are invited to join NFU Scotland and SAC Consulting Highlands and Islands at a joint meeting to look at the different options for lamb castration and tail docking.

New equipment has been developed and become more widely available in recent years with the intention of providing simple systems which reduce the pain experienced by lambs when castration or tail docking is performed.

We will hear from the following guest speakers about two options currently available on the market followed by the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with the ClipFitter and Numnuts applicators.
🟢Alasdair Carswell, Oban Veterinary Surgeons
🟢Dougal Deans, Product Development and Technical Support Manager, Merlin Vet Group who will outline and demonstrate the Numnuts system
🟢Jenny Love, Senior Consultant and Area Manager at SAC Consulting who will demonstrate the ClipFitter system and discuss equipment that is available for hire/trial from SAC Oban

Everyone welcome❗️
