Calling all Orkney Young Farmers! We're having a Cattle Over-Wintering Workshop, join us at the Stones on the 14th October at 6:30 followed by a visit to Upper Onston.

Speakers include: Graham Low and Liam Muir
The meeting will look into:
- Competition rules and scoring
- Turning out and showing good beef cattle
- Feeding strategies and nutrition

🐮 Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme 2026 🐮

An update has been issued from the Scottish Government regarding the SSBSS for 2026.

They have advised that rules are unchanged from last year and they are as follows
• Their dam has a calving interval threshold of 410 or less, or
• If the calf is the first registered birth associated with that dam.

The small producer derogation remains in place – this means that those claiming support for 10 calves or fewer will not need to meet the calving interval requirement.

The main question everyone has is “Will I be penalised for claiming calves which have exceeded the calving interval threshold?” the answer to this is no, there will be no administrative penalty for any calves that exceed the 410 day interval.
