Today, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all around the world. It's a day to reflect on the progress we've made towards gender equality and to recognise the work that still needs to be done.

As project management professionals, we believe empowering and supporting women in our industry is essential. Project management involves teamwork and collaboration, and we know diverse teams are more successful. By having more women lead and be integral members of our teams, we will bring unique perspectives, skills, and experiences that help us all deliver better outcomes.

Unfortunately, women are still underrepresented in project management. According to recent research, only 30% of project management roles globally are held by women. Project management or change management?

It’s a common conundrum. You’re not sure whether to use project or change management, and you’re not alone.

The answer is: it depends.

You see, each discipline has its own distinct focus and set of tools and techniques. Project management is about deliverables, timelines and costs; change management is about people, culture and adoption.

And while there is some overlap between the two (especially when it comes to stakeholder management), in general, you need to be clear about which discipline you are using and why.

So, what’s the best way to choose? Well, it depends on the situation. If you’re working on a one-time, discrete project with a clearly defined scope, then project management is probably your best bet. However, if you’re working on an ongoing initiative with multiple stakeholders and a complex web of dependencies, then change management is likely to be a better fit.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule – and there will be times when you need to use both disciplines in order to achieve your objectives. The important thing is to be flexible, and to use the art and science of both disciplines to deliver at scale and complexity
