And another old project still going strong. I think its the local community and volunteer strength which makes these so successful? Let alone the amazing heritage they have to work with 😁

The Ashington Group, also known as the Pitmen Painters, produced hundreds of paintings showing what life was like both above and below ground for their mining communities in Northumberland.

They began as an art appreciation class in 1934, through the WEA (Workers Education Association). Their tutor wanted them to learn about art though ‘doing’ so the group started to paint.

Over the next 50 years the Ashington Group met weekly, experimenting with techniques and materials. The story of the Ashington Group would later inspire Lee Hall’s famous play ‘The Pitmen Painters’.

Enjoy a bite-size tour of the gallery at 12noon and 3pm that will introduce you to the inspirational story of the Ashington Group and showcase a few highlights from this incredible collection.

The Ashington Group Collection is on permanent display in a dedicated gallery with the support of the Ashington Group Trustees.

Its so wonderful to see old projects I have worked on still going strong. But all credit to the team at Chedham's Yard who have really made this a superb attraction. If you in the area do pop in and visit. Its really like stepping back in time in a beautiful rural Warwickshire village.

Chedham's Yard will be part of Wellesbourne's Open Gardens for Wildlife weekend. Come and see what we are doing to encourage biodiversity and wildlife in our patch of the village.

A volunteer from Warwickshire Wildlife Trust will tell us about what they are doing to create and maintain an environment rich in wildlife.

We have all our usual entertainment - blacksmith and wood turning demonstrations, tea and coffee making in the cafe and not to forget the carving of the cake so you can have a slice with the drink of your choice.

We'll be open at 11 with last entry at 3pm.

Following the closure of the historic campus at Lampeter, we are deeply concerned about potential cuts at Cardiff. The university has played a vital role in training archaeologists, and its partnerships, like the award-winning CAER Heritage project, have made a lasting impact on local communities.
