Health & Safety Support Built Around Higher Standards

In our industry, health and safety is not something you can afford to get wrong.

The British Aggregates Association provides members with practical, high-level health and safety support, from representation on the National Strategic Forum for Health & Safety and across QNJAC working groups to specialist advice, regular updates, committee engagement and support through the Assessment of Operating Standards (AOS) Scheme, a scheme recognised and highly regarded by the HSE.

Our approach is underpinned by the BAA’s 5 C’s Leadership Strategy: Consistency, Capability, Capacity, Competence and Compliance. Together, these principles help drive safer working practices, stronger leadership and continuous improvement across the sector.

For many businesses, particularly SMEs and family-run operations, access to this level of support and representation is invaluable.

If you want to stay informed, strengthen standards within your organisation, and be supported by an association actively shaping health and safety across the industry, now is the time to join.

World Environment Day 2026

Today is World Environment Day, with the 2026 campaign focused on climate change and the actions needed to respond.

At the British Aggregates Association, we recognise the role our industry plays in supporting practical environmental progress. From smarter equipment choices and alternative energy use to on-site recycling and water management, small decisions on site can make a meaningful difference across the wider supply chain.

Supporting a stronger industry also means supporting a more responsible one.

Volunteers’ Week 2026

This week marks Volunteers’ Week, running from 1–7 June 2026, a UK-wide celebration recognising the contribution volunteers make to communities across the country. The campaign also encourages more people and organisations to get involved and make a difference locally.

At the British Aggregates Association, we know our industry is rooted in local communities. That is why Volunteers’ Week is a good opportunity to encourage businesses across quarrying and aggregates to support local causes, schools, charities, environmental projects and community initiatives through volunteering.

Giving time, sharing skills, and supporting local projects can create lasting value far beyond the workplace. Whether it is helping at a community event, supporting a local school, taking part in a clean-up, or offering practical expertise, volunteering is a powerful way for our sector to give something back.

We encourage our members to support their local communities wherever they can and help make a positive difference.

Warmer weather. Same hidden dangers.

As temperatures rise, it is important to remind the public that quarry water is never safe to enter.

It may look calm from the edge, but quarry water can be extremely cold, even in warm weather, which can trigger cold water shock. There may also be deep water, sudden drop-offs, hidden debris, unstable edges, and very limited exit points, turning one wrong decision into a life-threatening situation.

The British Aggregates Association is urging operators to stay alert and continue helping raise awareness in local communities. Education matters, because the more people understand the risks, the more lives we can help protect. The majority of public deaths in quarries are water related, making awareness especially important.

Stay out. Stay safe.

BAA Writes to Chancellor on Fuel and Energy Pressures Facing the Minerals Sector

We have written directly to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on behalf of our members, raising the increasing fuel and energy pressures facing UK quarrying, mineral extraction and mineral processing operators.

While we fully support Government recognising the challenges facing agriculture and farming, many of the same operational pressures also apply across the minerals sector.

Quarrying and mineral processing are highly energy intensive, with many operators relying on diesel-powered mobile plant, electricity-intensive processing systems and, in some cases, significant industrial gas consumption.

Commercially viable alternatives remain limited, particularly for SMEs and businesses operating in remote locations where grid capacity can be restricted.

Minerals underpin housing, roads, infrastructure, renewable energy, flood defence, manufacturing, transport, food production, steel production and wider UK economic growth.

That is why we are asking Government to recognise the minerals sector as strategically important to national resilience, and to fully understand the real-world pressures affecting its long-term viability.

This is not about resisting environmental progress.

It is about making sure the industries that keep the UK building, moving and growing are properly heard.

Much of our work takes place behind the scenes through continued engagement with Government, HM Treasury, regulators and industry stakeholders.

That work matters, and it is only possible through the continued support of our members.

No Falls Week 2026

This week marks No Falls Week, taking place from 18–22 May 2026. The campaign, organised by the No Falls Foundation, is dedicated to promoting safe working at height and helping prevent falls across industry.

For the quarrying and aggregates sector, working at height remains a serious safety issue, whether that involves plant access, maintenance, walkways, conveyors, inspections or working near edges. At the British Aggregates Association, we know that strong planning, the right equipment, clear procedures and proper training all play a vital role in reducing risk.

No Falls Week is a timely reminder to review controls, refresh awareness and make sure everyone working at height has the knowledge and support to do the job safely.

Be safe. Do it right.
