🐄 Our heifer rearing manager, Liz Lunn (Newman), spoke at the colostrum and hygiene course for Scottish Women in Dairy last week. The day was hosted by our client and award-winning herd manager, Leanne Bertram, at Mains of Boquhan - Graham's family dairy.

Attendees heard from Liz, Leanne, Connie Yates from Kersia, Alana from Forthvalley Vets and Morven from SCCL, making it a well-rounded and highly practical session.

🇩🇰 Denmark Study Tour

Last week, the team headed over to Denmark for a study tour, kindly hosted by Vilofoss.

The main focus was transition cows, but it was also a great chance to see how Danish farms are run day-to-day and pick up some ideas around herd health. We visited a range of farms, milking between 480 and 970 Jersey cows.

What stood out were the number of farms in Denmark using X-Zelit asa key tool for transition management. One unit, have used it for over 10 years due to its effectiveness and simplicity.

🐄 Professor Geoffrey Dahl joined us from the USA this week to give an insight into his latest research into heat stress.

Some key points included:-

🐮Heat stress doesn't just impact on the milking herd
🐮Dry cows exhibit carryover effects of heat stress into early lactation
🐮In utero heat stress reduces passive immune transfer regardless of colostrum source
🐮The affects extended to the heifer calf of a heat stressed cow include poorer health and less milk
🐮Studies have shown that cows can lose up to 4 litres per day due to heat stress

On a more practical level there were also some good discussions about the benefits of soaking cows with water rather than misting and considering drawing clean air into sheds where we have fans.
