With more growers looking to home-grown pulses to replace bought-in soya, keeping crops healthy and pest-free is vital for securing winter protein supplies.

The Processors and Growers Research Organisation (PGRO) has issued an important warning following reports of pea bruchid beetle in UK pea crops across sites in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

This pest can complete its life cycle inside combining pea crops, directly threatening grain quality and yield.

We urge all pulse growers to stay vigilant in the field:

🔍 Check your crops regularly for any signs of beetle activity.

📸 Report findings quickly by sending clear images via the PGRO app or directly to [email protected].

Facing a shortage of clamp space or looking at lighter forage yields after a dry summer?

Switching your focus from forage to crimped grain maize could be the smartest business move you make this season.

Crimping grain maize allows you to harvest the cob roughly three weeks earlier than drying, harvesting at peak nutritional value at 35% to 40% moisture. By rolling the grain and treating it with CrimpSafe 300, you create a dense, highly palatable concentrate right on your own yard.

Because you are only clamping the grain rather than the whole plant, it takes up a fraction of the storage space. You get an energy-dense feed with an ME of around 14MJ/kg DM, perfect for replacing costly bought-in cereals or compounds in your winter TMRs.

Growing high-yielding forage maize in the north of England without plastic? Some said it couldn't be done.

Martin and Elaine Sedgewick proved otherwise at Long Myers Farm near Durham city. Finishing hundreds of continental store cattle every year, they needed a high-energy forage to drive liveweight gains while cutting down on expensive bought-in feeds.

By picking early-maturing varieties and preserving the crop with Safesil Pro, they hit impressive freshweight yields of 20 to 25 tonnes per acre. Safesil Pro ensures a rapid fermentation with zero heating at feedout, keeping the forage cool, fresh, and palatable.

The proof is at the weigh-scale. Their cattle achieve average liveweight gains of 10 to 14kg per week during finishing.

With fuel prices fluctuating and margins under constant pressure, traditional grain drying can feel like an expensive habit. Between the direct energy bills and the steep depreciation on a batch dryer, processing your home-grown cereals the old-fashioned way eats into your bottom line before the feed ever hits the trough.

Independent consultant Dr George Fisher recently crunched the numbers on processing 200 tonnes of wheat or barley. His analysis showed that preserving your grain with Propcorn NC is at least £1,828 cheaper than using a dryer - saving farmers around 40% on their baseline processing costs.

When you dry grain down from 20% to 14% moisture for standard storage, you also lose about 64kg of grain weight per tonne simply through water evaporation. Propcorn NC completely avoids that shrinkage loss by safely preserving whole or rolled grain at up to 30% moisture for up to 12 months.

But this is about more than just direct financial savings. Because Propcorn NC handles higher moisture crops, it gives you the flexibility to harvest earlier. That means you cut down on field shedding losses and open up a much wider, cleaner window for your follow-on autumn cultivations.

From a nutritional standpoint, the benefits are clear. Propcorn NC adds valuable nitrogen to help rumen microbes thrive, and independent trials show it can boost milk yields and daily liveweight gains in beef cattle by up to 4%. It also virtually eliminates dust in the processing shed, keeping the working environment much safer and healthier for your farm team.
