Is hidden soil compaction costing you up to £720 per hectare in lost forage yield? 🚜🌱

As highlighted by independent grassland consultant Dr George Fisher, in a grass field cut three times for silage, around 85% of the ground is wheeled at least once - with roughly 60% of that compaction occurring on the very first pass. Research from SRUC and DairyCo demonstrates that tractor wheeling compaction can reduce first-cut grass dry matter yields by up to 22%. On a 12t DM/ha sward, that equates to losing 2.4 tonnes of DM per hectare, costing an estimated £720/ha in lost home-grown feed value.

At the Forefront of Sustainable Protein Research 🔬🌱

We are proud to announce our involvement in DUET - a new £27,500 research trial - funded by The Hannah Dairy Research Foundation investigating the rumen degradability of UK-grown peas and beans.

Led by the James Hutton Institute and Glasgow University, we will be working with the Processors and Growers Research Organisation (PGRO) on this two-year project we will evaluate the exact protein breakdown and nutritional availability of various legume wholecrops in livestock diets.

Tackling Late-Season Grass Growth: Autumn Silage Success 🚜🌾

With mild, wet weather keeping grass growing late into autumn, many livestock producers are considering taking an extra cut. However, harvesting silage in October presents unique technical challenges - low dry matter, low natural crop sugars and an elevated risk of soil contamination during wet autumn conditions.

Under these conditions, standard bacterial inoculants often fail because there is simply not enough natural crop sugar to fuel a rapid, beneficial lactic acid fermentation.

Michael had a great visit to Martyn and Gruff Jones at Plas Onn, who are well placed for the winter ahead with a stable, high-quality feed supply.

Their Angus calves are reared in batches and either sold as forward stores or finished, depending on market conditions.
