Coming up in our Fine Jewellery auction is an elegant 18k diamond and ruby set pendant necklace by jeweller Leo de Vroomen.

Internationally renowned jeweller Leo de Vroomen was celebrated for jewellery that combined bold sculptural forms, striking colour and exceptional craftsmanship.

Born in the Netherlands, De Vroomen trained as a goldsmith in Switzerland before moving to London in 1965. It was here that he met artist and designer Ginnie, beginning a creative partnership that would span more than five decades. Together, they developed the distinctive De Vroomen style, with Leo’s technical mastery complemented by Ginnie’s artistic vision.

Their work embraced gold, gemstones and enamel, often using strong forms and carefully selected stones to create jewellery that was as expressive as it was wearable. Leo was also passionate about craftsmanship and training, helping to preserve and develop traditional goldsmithing skills.

Among the highlights of his career were two De Beers Diamonds International Awards, in 1974 and 1986, while exhibitions at Goldsmiths’ Hall celebrated the couple’s remarkable contribution to British jewellery.

Now offered in our September Fine Jewellery sale is this exceptional 18k diamond and ruby-set pendant necklace, dating to circa 1980. The cushion-shaped pendant features two central baguette-cut diamonds, surrounded by calibre-cut rubies and pavé-set diamonds, suspended from a double-row bar-and-link necklace.

A striking example of De Vroomen’s distinctive approach to colour, form and craftsmanship.

Between lots 281 and 313 in our current Fine Jewellery sale is the jewellery stock of Matthew Upham Antiques Ltd.

The popular antiques dealer Matthew Upham had been a client of Lay's Auctioneers for many years. We were deeply saddened to hear that he was one of the brave souls lost at sea at Budleigh Salterton last Christmas while aiding other swimmers. An extremely loved individual, tributes poured in from many hundreds of people whose lives he had touched.

We were honoured to be asked by Major Harley Upham, Director of Matthew Upham Antiques Ltd., to handle some of the stock of jewellery, and what beautiful jewellery it is.

At the forefront of this image is lot 304, A 19th-century Indian ruby and crystal set ring, set in filled gold.
