A long-winded post but a great way to lead into the photos and videos that follow of the Protection Racket & Drum Clinics we did last week at & where I was asked many times, how did you get Shane Hawkins to play in Cornwall? I didn’t, that’s down to Ian Whittaker at Quick Panda, but there’s a serendipitous connection that feels like it closed a circle that began 21 years ago. In 2005, Team Protection Rackets (Avenged Sevenfold) was playing for Bad Religion and he kindly invited us to Reading Festival where were headlining. We took Chops and his bestie Curt along and one of them had a “Taylor Hawkins is God” pin badge on! Chops and Curt somehow made their way into the Foo’s compound Taylor saw it and invited them into his dressing room!! They were in and out like kids are and I went to find them to make sure they were behaving themselves. I met Dave Grohl outside, apologised and asked if they were Ok being there, he replied; it’s all cool, they’re in there winding Taylor up and he’s loving it, go say hi. I walked in sheepishly and introduced myself we had a lovely chat and he happily posed for a photo with the boys, the first one here 🖤

Fast forward 17 years and Brooks Wackerman got in touch to say one his best mates’ sons band were playing at Boardmasters and their bass player had broken his finger, could I find them a bass player for their set? That band were So Cal’s finest; .alive The Dad of lead singer/guitarist Bastian is the extremely lovely and super chilled . We met each time The Alive played in Cornwall, turns out Chris is a surfer and drummer too, Oh and was great friends with Taylor Hawkins growing up in Laguna Beach together! His son Bastian grew up alongside Shane and they’re firm friends, so when The Alive were invited over to The Great Estate last year and accompanied, Ian had the idea of doing a drum clinic at the Dead Famous & The Great estate, invited us to host and well, here we are again 🖤
