As we have been talking about values in our peer community of practice as part of the Level 2 accredited course discussions, this quote seems particularly relevant.

We hear a lot in the personal development field about ‘if you just think positively and focus on what you want, you’ll get it’ or words to that effect.

However, there’s a massive part missing in that equation. We need to be completely honest about where we are right now. If we don’t, the parts that we have overlooked will cause obstacles for us.

We need a benchmark so that we can measure the distance we need to, and then will, travel.

Being completely honest with ourselves and acknowledging what’s really happening at the moment, allows us to see where we need to go. How do we know what changes are right for us if we don’t ‘know’ ourselves right now?

Also, if we can’t accept where we are, or who we are right now, what makes us think we will be able to do that when we have ‘changed’? We can end up in the ‘I’m never good enough’ loop.

What do you think? How do you interpret this quote?

(I’m quite into this early existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. The DENT model is underpinned by work such as this. See https://thedentmodel.com/ if this interests you)

Why are some treatments favoured by doctors and others ignored ?

Fascinating article by one of the world’s leading specialists in trauma and its treatments. Although it focuses on the US insurance based system’s reliance on the diagnostic manual, in the UK we are equally reliant on so called ‘evidence based’ treatments that are no better than placebo whilst other treatments that many clinicians and patients find more helpful are not receiving the funding needed for building a solid research base.

Pioneering trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk took aim not only at the politics within the therapy field that determine what diagnoses get into the DSM, but the politics in the larger arena that lead people to ignore the prevalence of trauma in society.

This is an interesting article that shows research supports the DENT purposefulness model, the model that underpins our Peer Coaching diplomas. Having purpose keeps us motivated and thus less likely to experience fatigue when we are immersed in purposefulness occupation - what is your experience of fatigue? Can you relate to what the article tells us about motivation and gratified being linked?

People often come to us feeling very low at this time of the year. This article from Emma, explains how, in fact, there are very good reasons why we feel tired, low, and demotivated at this time of year. The clue is in our ancestry.
Inside, you will find 5 things that you can do to feel better at this time of year.

So, it’s that time of year again. The clocks have changed, it’s getting dark early, the weather is wet or freezing, and everybody is bemoaning either the early appearance of Christmas in the season…

Emma has been working hard to put together a piece of psycho-social research around single parent needs.

If you are a single parent or know single parents, we would be very grateful if you could take approximately 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire below, and share it with other single parents.

Inside the link below, there is an information sheet, outlining that all data is anonymised and participants cannot be identified. You can read through this before you participate, and then decide if you want to consent to completing the questionnaire or not.

We have the interest of local MPs around the work we are doing with single parents and we hope to make a difference for this group in our society, in our local communities.

If you are a single parent, and wish to meet the MP to discuss these issues, please join us on Sunday 15th September, in the Sun Hotel, Hitchin from 7pm to 8.30pm.

With regards to the completion of the survey, we have heard from respondents that it is best to complete the survey via computer or laptop, as there seems to be a glitch in the smartphone version. If you need any assistance, or would like us to send you a hard copy to complete, please comment below and I will arrange to contact you for further details.

Thank you in advance for your time. :)

Please take the survey titled "Single Parent Needs". Your feedback is important to us and we very much appreciate your time! Thank you so much :)
