How do 𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 women rise inside systems never built for them?

Each week, I will spotlight one who did.
She’s not just a visionary... she’s integration in motion.
Unapologetically!

She signed her proposals “Steve.”
Not because she wanted to hide...
But because she knew the system wouldn’t see her otherwise.

This week, we honour a rebel in pearls and punch cards.
𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲 “𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲” 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆.
A woman who coded her way through patriarchy and made millionaires of mothers, long before equity was fashionable.
She passed this week. But her systems still speak.

Escaping N**i Germany via Kindertransport, she carried one vow into her empire: make her life “worth saving.” And she did.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆:
She didn’t just break ceilings. She rewrote floor plans.
Founder of a £2B tech company when women couldn’t even open a bank account alone.
She built remote work before it was a concept.
In her company, flexibility for mothers wasn’t a perk... it was a principle.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀:
She signed “Steve” to be heard.Launched a company while raising her disabled son.Walked into boardrooms where no woman had been.She risked rejection, rest, and reputation.Her gamble? That women could do 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 men did, and more.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲:
Not ego... just devotion.
To justice. To innovation. To those the system forgot.
Her fire was survival, channelled into sacred disruption.
Soul-led scale, before we had a word for it.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀:
A software empire from her kitchen table.
An all-woman team working from home, around caregiving, in integrity.
Later, she invested her fortune in autism research, Oxford Internet Institute, and female-led tech.
Her systems bore the imprint of soul, not just strategy.

𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀:
❇️ You don’t need to play by their rules to win.
❇️ Build for the woman you once were.
❇️ Money multiplies when mission leads.
❇️ When they won’t hire you? Hire yourself.
❇️ Legacy isn’t a plaque. It’s a repeatable pattern.

You’re standing in a system never built for you.
Instead of squeezing yourself to fit...you design something 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 new.
You sign “Steve,” not to vanish... but to make them listen.
You turn limits into launch codes.
You hire the women they overlooked.
You make 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 rich too.

𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳…
You weren’t born to beg for access.
You were born to rewrite the access points.
To turn resistance into rituals.
To build systems soft enough for soul,and strong enough to scale it.

We rise because she did.
And we keep rising... unapologetically.

I've been inconsistent in providing content for a bit. From wrapping up my life in South Africa, ensuring that my children can manage their own lives in my absence ; to steering the logistics in relocating hemispheres, dancing to a new rhythm here in Wales, finding an apartment, navigating my way around day-to-day processes and products , the culture and rules, the streets. I always had a very strong sense of direction, but moving hemispheres threw me completely off kilter. And all of this while still consulting to my current client in South Africa. Now fully remote.

It has been a rollercoaster ride of magnitudes, the ups&downs is what makes this journey so exhilarating. Accepting what is, so I can let go of that which is not in my control. Most importantly, growing in patience. The waiting at times were unbearable, trusting the knowing that I am exactly where I am meant to be, and everything will happen at exactly the right time. In other words, trusting myself more than ever before.

During all this time, I still managed to squeeze in another accolade by completing the SAFe® SPC Program Consultant Certification Course. I will be writing the exam within the allowed 30 days after course completion, but only after I have moved into my own li'l castle on the Penarth coast this coming weekend.

In this process of total transformation into the golden years of my career, it feels like I am reinventing myself. However, as one of my mentors pointed out, it is not about reinventing oneself, but rather a process of removing the layers of noise, so that one can be razor sharp in purpose.

Currently I am reflecting on my career, a total of 30 years of journeying, mostly in the Financial Services sector of South Africa. I must admit that for most of them, I did what needed to be done for the sole purpose of providing for my 3 children as a single mother. It was a strong motivator to grow my career exponentially and due to my A+ personality, my CV speaks to a jack of all trades rather than master of some .

Suddenly, I am now living for me. It is daunting and exciting at the same time. I find myself asking the questions, what it is that I am good at, what it is that I really want, and what I am truly passionate about, ALL THE TIME now. I have asked these questions many times before, but the impact has never quite been what it is now, I guess this is what empty nest syndrome creates.

What I am alluding to is: You will note regular updates to my profile over the coming months as I am re-positioning myself to be a global SME in project delivery. I am getting rid of the noise and onto the nitty and gritty of the value add of my purpose. Once this process has completed itself, I will be in a position to provide research and content, with a razor-sharp focus on getting things done in IT delivery.

It's been a journey to get here and I'm still on this journey. I don't think I will ever quite arrive to use data for good, to safe proof data, to future proof data, and to find new innovative solutions to today's organizational, structural and system problems, with data.

Do you have a backup plan to smart technology in your home?

"The outage has raised concern whether households are putting too much emphasis on artifical intelligence.

ESET, an internet security company, recommends all households use traditional "switches" and other "backup" technologies.

Jake Moore, Global Cyber Security Advisor at ESET, said: "Although it is difficult to predict whether or not this is a cyberattack on Amazon’s servers, it does pose the question of whether or not we are putting too much emphasis on smart technology in our homes. Cyberattacks are still possible despite the increasingly sophisticated anti-malware technology that exists, and therefore we must never become complacent against the possibility of such a hack which can dramatically effect large numbers of people.

"Once we put all our eggs into one technological basket, there becomes one simple point of failure that can have a huge impact in a smart home and therefore our daily lives. Using smart devices to control lights, heating and other areas of a home is extremely tempting but it is advised to always know if the backup 'old fashioned' switches are still applicable.""

On 11 September 2021 I was accepted as an affiliate member of the Irish Computer Society on first application. The membership was upgraded and I have been awarded full membership status due to my commitment to the highest professional standards in the industry on 22 November 2021. Being local, going global. Looking forward to add value and be an active member of the Irish Computer Society in 2022. It is my time to share my 30 years of industry experience, lessons learnt and to learn from a global affiliate.

We are treating this as a P1 event. Patching is not the solution. Currently analyzing our systems to determine next steps in securing our networks.

"I’d be hard-pressed to think of a company that’s not at risk,” said Joe Sullivan, chief security officer for Cloudflare, whose online infrastructure protects websites from malicious actors. Untold millions of servers have it installed and experts said the fallout would not be known for several days.

Amit Yoran, CEO of the cybersecurity firm Tenable, called it “the single biggest, most critical vulnerability of the last decade” – and possibly the biggest in the history of modern computing.

The vulnerability was rated 10 on a scale of one to 10 by the Apache Software Foundation, which oversees development of the software. Anyone with the exploit can obtain full access to an unpatched computer that uses the software.

Experts said the extreme ease with which the vulnerability lets an attacker access a web server – no password required – is what makes it so dangerous.

New Zealand’s computer emergency response team was among the first to report that the flaw was being “actively exploited in the wild” just hours after it was publicly reported on Thursday and a patch released.

The vulnerability, located in open-source Apache software used to run websites and other web services, was reported to the foundation on 24 November by the Chinese tech giant Alibaba, it said. It took two weeks to develop and release a fix.

But patching systems around the world could be a complicated task. While most organizations and cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services should be able to update their web servers easily, the same Apache software is also often embedded in third-party programs, which can only be updated by their owners.

Yoran said organizations needed to presume they’d been compromised and act quickly."

The Cybercrimes Act defines three types of harmful messages that have been criminalised in South Africa. They are messages which:
1. Incite damage to property or violence.
2. Threaten people with damage to property or violence.
3. Unlawfully contain an intimate image.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Cybercrimes Bill into law, with parts of the bill now set to take effect from 1 December 2021.
