With some of my 11+ students I have also been doing some work on non-verbal reasoning. This relates to shapes and patterns which groups images together or which completes a changing pattern.
If you look at question 33, the only option is option B.
We have to look at the criteria for entrance into the top circle.
It's almost like a bouncer that stops people from getting into parties.
So the bouncer for the group of shapes above, will only let B in because the others break some of the rules which group the top shapes together.
There has to be a white border around the shapes, they need to be half white striped and half grey stripes. The need to have two halves inside of the outline and the lines should be parallel of the line connecting the two halves.
Look at question 34.
What are the rules which the top shapes follow?
Which shape is the only shape to follow the same rule?

This is a picture of some of the work I have been doing with one of my 11+ students.

This is an example of verbal reasoning challenges that the exam will ask of them. The trick is to look at where the middle word is getting its letters from and to identify patterns and rules.

Look at question 1.

In question 1, the first letter of the middle word (a in auto) comes from the first letter of the first word. The second letter (u) comes from the second letter of the second word. The third letter (l) comes from the second letter of the first word. At this point, you have one more letter to figure it. It isn't clear whether the last letter is coming from the first or the second word as both words have 'o' as their third letter. However, we don't need to worry as the only word starting with 'sol' is 'solo'. So the correct answer is C, 'solo'.

What's the answer for question 2?

These sorts of questions are testing students' abilities to identify patterns and relationships between words and be able to apply the same rules to new words. It's testing their logic, their ability to hold several pieces of information in their heads and so much more.

This kind of question is enjoyable for me to work on with students as it requires them to verbalise their thinking and encourages them to expand their problem solving skills.

This sort of question demands deeper thinking and subject knowledge.

Maths isn't always about finding one answer in a straight forward way. Sometimes reasoning and problem solving skills are needed.
