WHO SHOULD ATTEND DESIGN TEAM MEETINGS?

A design review works best when the people who own the decisions also own the actions.

The client team establishes the brief and decision route. The fire engineer provides strategy objectives. The architect coordinates space and design intent, while the MEP team manages water, power, controls and service routes. The specialist contractor develops the relevant system detail, evidence and delivery information.

For a developer or architect leading the meeting, naming those roles can help stop assumptions passing silently between disciplines. It also makes it easier to record what is confirmed, what remains outstanding and who must respond before the next design stage. Integrated Fire can contribute practical design, installation and maintenance knowledge within that wider team.

A simple responsibility map is worth saving: who makes the decision, who supplies the information, who checks the interface and who closes the action?

Why have in person design coordination meetings seemingly disappeared over the past decade? They're incredibly helpful, get in touch with us, let's bring them back!

WE'VE JUST SAVED ONE OF OUR CLIENTS 17% OFF OF THEIR MOST COMPETITIVE SPRINKLER QUOTE!

EARLY PLANNING CAN REDUCE LATE DESIGN CHANGE

Early fire-protection coordination protects choices. Late coordination consumes them.

For a developer or main contractor, the difference often becomes visible when plant areas, risers and ceiling zones have already been allocated. A change to water provision, equipment location or service routing may then affect architecture, MEP coordination, procurement and installation sequencing.

Agreeing the design basis earlier can help the team reserve the right allowances and expose missing information before it becomes a site issue. Change control still matters throughout the project, but decisions are generally easier to evaluate while layouts and packages remain flexible. IFSS can support the fire-protection workstream with practical design and delivery input; the illustration is a general planning lesson, not a claimed project before-and-after.

The takeaway to share is: brief early, reserve allowances and review changes before procurement. Those three steps can support better programme certainty without guaranteeing that every redesign will be avoided.

Which fire-protection decision would benefit most from moving earlier in your programme?

What do our customers value most? Reliability, communication and people they can trust.

We’ve been pleased to receive a number of positive reviews recently from clients using IFSS for both installation and ongoing maintenance.

Across the feedback, the same points keep coming up:
- Engineers who are professional, knowledgeable and reliable
- Strong communication before, during and after site visits
- Flexibility around access and scheduling requirements
- Responsive customer service when issues need resolving
- Practical advice and support, particularly on ongoing maintenance
- Consistent service across fire alarm and water mist systems

One client highlighted the support provided by Josiah, recognising his professionalism, knowledge, timekeeping and the standard of his maintenance work.

Another commented on how our engineers take the time to understand site requirements and work around operational restrictions without disrupting the client.

We also received positive feedback from a long standing client with water mist systems across both commercial and residential properties, particularly around our flexibility, advice and support with challenging access and maintenance requirements.

For us, this is what long term fire protection support should look like: not just attending site, but giving clients confidence that their systems are being looked after properly.

Thank you to our clients for the feedback, and to the IFSS team for maintaining that standard.

PROJECT UPDATE | Temporary and Permanent Fire Alarm & Disabled Refuge Installation – West London Industrial Estate

How do you maintain fire alarm coverage while installing a completely new system?

Our engineers are currently working on a site over at the Victoria Industrial Estate, installing a new fire alarm and Ignis disabled refuge system across the warehouse and office areas.

While the permanent installation progresses, we're using our wireless Group Ltd fire alarm systems to provide temporary fire alarm coverage until the new system has been fully commissioned and brought into operation.

The photographs show our engineers carrying out installation work of the fire alarm equipment.

For contractors and property managers, maintaining suitable fire protection during refurbishment or installation works is an important consideration.

At Integrated Fire, we can support both temporary fire alarm arrangements and permanent fire protection installations, helping project teams manage the transition between systems.

Are you planning a fire alarm upgrade or refurbishment where temporary fire protection may be required?

Contact our team to discuss your project.

Sprinkler Pump Standard Updated: What the Fire Safety Industry Needs to Know

On 31 July 2026, BSI published BS EN 12259-12:2023+A1:2026, an amended standard covering pumps used in fixed sprinkler and water-spray systems.

What does the update mean?

The “+A1:2026” shows that the first amendment has been incorporated into the 2023 edition of the standard. This means fire-safety professionals should ensure they are referring to the amended version when specifying, supplying or reviewing sprinkler pumps.

The update is particularly relevant to:

• Fire sprinkler designers and installers
• Fire engineers and consultants
• M&E contractors
• Pump manufacturers and suppliers
• Project managers and compliance teams

What should businesses do?

• Update internal standards registers and technical templates
• Review pump specifications and technical submissions
• Check manufacturers’ certification and product documentation
• Confirm which edition is referenced in project specifications and contracts
• Consider the update alongside the current edition of BS EN 12845
• Obtain and review the complete amendment before changing designs or specifications

This does not automatically mean that existing sprinkler systems are non compliant or that pumps must immediately be replaced. The applicable project specification, contract requirements, approval process and date of installation must all be considered.

The key message for the fire-safety industry is simple: standards continue to develop, and keeping technical documents current is essential for compliant design, installation and handover.

At IFSS, we work with contractors, consultants and project teams to design and deliver compliant fire sprinkler systems from the early design stages through to project completion.

WHEN WATER MIST CAN SUPPORT SPACE CONSTRAINED PROJECTS

When space is tight, water mist could be your best option.

An architect or developer might be looking to reduce stored-water demand, protect usable space or simplify coordination within a constrained residential layout. Some suitable water-mist systems may support those objectives. The actual plant footprint, storage arrangement, pipe routes, access zones and maintenance needs still depend on the selected product, application and developed design.

With a pump that fits inside a kitchen cabinet, iCO Products: Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems is a great option!

IFSS can review the available space, water provision and building interfaces alongside building controls requirements and we will recommend the best option for you whether it be Residential Sprinklers or Water-mist. Suitability and the project acceptance route must remain subject to competent, project-specific review, it is rare that one solution fits all.

Which constraint is driving your project: time, plant space, structural constraints, routing or building control?

THREE WAYS MAINTAINABILITY HELPS BUILDING MANAGERS

At handover, the building manager inherits every maintenance decision made during design.

If equipment, controls or test points are difficult to reach, routine work may become more disruptive. If asset labels, as-installed drawings, commissioning results or product information are incomplete, the service team may spend time rebuilding the information trail before it can plan the work.

That missing context can also make future alterations and responsibility tracking harder to manage.

Designing for maintainability can help create safer access, clearer records and a more organised service plan. For architects, developers and contractors, that means checking whole-life needs before ceilings, cupboards and plant areas are fixed. IFSS brings servicing experience into design discussions so practical access and documentation are considered alongside installation; the final requirements still depend on the selected system and project.

The question worth saving for every design review is: can each important asset be reached, identified, tested and recorded after handover?

This isn't new so why do companies keep getting it wrong!

Strategy, innovation, and an uncompromising commitment to safety.

Today, Wayne and James from the Integrated Fire Safety Systems Ltd team attended the regional event at the historic Churchill War Rooms.

Hearing the strategic importance of the War Rooms’ critical communication hubs was a fitting backdrop for the day’s core discussion: getting the details right when lives depend on it.

Key takeaways from the session:

Safety is non-negotiable: The powerful session from Electrical Safety First and the tragic story shared regarding workplace electrocution reinforced why rigorous standards, safe isolation, and clear labelling matter every single day. Rushing deadlines can never come before human life.

The future of installation: Great insights into sustainable technological shifts, including 3D-printed lighting from .

Evolving standards: Valuable updates from the ECA and regarding the regulatory landscape and employment compliance.

In complex commercial builds, active fire suppression, and electrical safety, cutting corners or leaving scope gaps is never an option. It’s why our approach has always been simple: integrate every critical active safety element end-to-end to deliver absolute compliance, reliability, and peace of mind.

Thank you to the Greater London Regional Committee, Glen Grant, and all event sponsors for an insightful, impactful day.

Approved Document B Changes Take Effect on 30 September: What the Fire-Safety Industry Needs to Know

From 30 September 2026, amendments to Approved Document B will change the fire-safety guidance used for certain residential building work in England.

The update recommends more than one common stair in blocks of flats where the building has a top storey 18 metres or more above ground level. It also introduces design provisions supporting evacuation lifts, protected evacuation shafts, lift lobbies and associated smoke-control measures.

What does this mean for the industry?

For M&E contractors, consultants, architects, specifiers and project teams, the changes require early coordination between the building layout and its fire-safety systems. Revised stair and evacuation arrangements may affect fire-alarm interfaces, emergency lighting, smoke control, service routes and suppression-system layouts.

Practical actions to consider:
- Confirm whether each project falls under the new guidance or transitional arrangements.
- Review the fire strategy, evacuation approach and coordinated design.
- Check fire-alarm cause-and-effect requirements and lift interfaces.
- Reassess emergency-lighting, sprinkler or water-mist layouts around revised cores and lobbies.
- Record the applicable guidance and design decisions in project documentation.

These amendments do not automatically require existing residential buildings to install a second staircase. Approved Document B provides guidance supporting the Building Regulations, and the applicable requirements depend on the building work, approval route and transitional position.

The key message is clear: projects that coordinate the architectural, M&E and fire-protection requirements early will be better placed to avoid late redesign, programme delays and unexpected costs.

IFSS can support contractors, consultants and project teams with the coordination, design, installation and documentation of fire-protection systems affected by revised building layouts.
