Why did we choose The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS)? We wanted to consider both land-based, and water-based environmental charities for Mission Investment and our research led us to consider kelp-based solutions, which is one of SAMS’ research specialisms.
Our recent visit to Oban last week completely reshaped our perspective on their vital work. While we initially came focused on supporting kelp farming research, SAMS' impressive range quickly became apparent. They not only championing preventative and restorative measures for our oceans, but also spearheading critical advancements in collective understanding about ocean systems. This broader picture has led us to believe that a more holistic approach is necessary when addressing the global environmental crisis.
Considering this newfound appreciation for SAMS' multifaceted efforts, we must stress the importance of rethinking your carbon offsetting strategy. Rather than simply focusing on direct offsetting, we believe prioritising investments in research that deepens our understanding of the ocean's role in mitigating climate change is a more strategic approach. By supporting SAMS and similar institutions, we can contribute to a future where the ocean plays a more active role in combating the environmental crisis we all face.
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is one of the most experienced independent marine science organisations, and whilst their base may be in Scotland, SAMS’ research portfolio is global in its outlook, activities, and relevance, as well as diverse in topic and discipline.
SAMS’ vision is for healthy and sustainable oceans, to create a stronger planet. They work towards solutions for climate change, biodiversity loss, sustainable food, clean energy, and a wide range of other challenges, from ocean acidification and marine pollution to robotics innovation and extreme weather events.
Working internationally, in partnership with academia, government, industry, regulatory bodies, voluntary groups, and coastal communities, they ensure all maritime stakeholders can collaborate for the future of our ocean.
If you want to learn more about how you can adopt the Mission Investment approach for your carbon offset and support institutions like SAMS, we’d love to talk to you!
