Our latest blog looks at one of the most overlooked operational risks on industrial and commercial sites: waste storage fires.

From combustible packaging and hazardous waste to lithium batteries and overflowing skips, poorly managed waste storage areas can quickly become a major fire and environmental risk.

Why it matters:
🔥 Poor waste segregation and build up significantly increase fire risk
🔋 Lithium batteries and WEEE waste present growing hazards for businesses
⚠️ Waste storage fires can lead to operational disruption, pollution incidents and enforcement action

The Big Plastic Count has revealed that UK households throw away around 82 billion pieces of plastic every year, with most plastic waste now being sent to Energy from Waste facilities rather than recycled.

The findings highlight the growing challenge around flexible plastics and the UK’s recycling infrastructure.

Why it matters:
🛍️ Around 63% of household plastic waste is soft plastic film
🔥 59% of plastic waste is now sent to Energy from Waste facilities
♻️ Flexible plastic collections become mandatory for councils from March 2027

While recycling trials show promising results for flexible plastics, concerns remain around whether the UK has enough domestic processing capacity to handle future demand.

The UK’s recycling system remains heavily dependent on exporting waste materials overseas, but growing geopolitical instability and tighter regulation are raising questions about whether this approach is sustainable long term.

A new analysis explores the benefits, risks and future of waste exports in the UK.

Why it matters:
🌍 Plastics, textiles and lower grade paper still rely heavily on overseas processing
🚢 Global shipping disruption and rising costs are exposing weaknesses in supply chains
♻️ New waste tracking and export reporting rules will increase transparency from 2026 onwards

🏭 While exports remain essential for many materials, the sector is increasingly focused on balancing international markets with stronger domestic recycling infrastructure.
