Made you look? 👀

Getting a job in HR can be tricky enough but picture this…

You’ve found an opportunity at a small startup company to get involved in the HR department - sounds like a dream, right?

But, you’re worried about job security and your salary. Will this small startup be able to keep me on, and will I grow with the business? 🤯

Here’s why size, in this case, doesn’t matter…

Small startups often offer unique opportunities for growth and learning.

While job security might seem uncertain, the chance to take on diverse responsibilities and make a significant impact early on can be invaluable for your career development.

Startups tend to foster a dynamic and innovative work culture, providing a stimulating environment to thrive in. 👏🏼

Don’t let the size of the company deter you from seizing an opportunity that could lead to meaningful career advancement. ⬇️

Listen to your team.

Listening makes people feel valued and heard, even if their idea isn’t a good one but acknowledging their idea and coming up with other relatable solutions is key.

This all forms part of being a leader ⬇️

Here are my top tips in a leadership role:

- Identify your own leadership style, on good days and on bad
- Talk to your team
- Set very clear expectations
- No two people learn the same, get to know their preferred learning style
- Feedback is important, don’t underestimate the power it can have

A disciplinary can be an unfamiliar territory for managers

Often it is avoided due to a lack of understanding for the process, with this comes risks:

Risk 1. By not going to disciplinary you are accepting and normalising the misconduct / poor performance

Risk 2. Eventually, you will lose your amazing team if you don’t get a hold of unacceptable behaviour

Risk 3. A failure to follow a fair process can result in high legal fees through an employment tribunal

You can thank me later 🤍

Since April 2020 it has become a lot stricter about the requirement to issue an employee with a contract on or before day one of employment.

Failure to provide a colleague with a written contract before the end of their first day may result in an additional 3 or 4 weeks of money added to their claim.

To avoid facing financial damages, let's chat about getting a contract of employment in place ready for your new hire's first day.

We've all heard the phrase, people leave bad managers not bad businesses.

Without upskilling your managers you will not be able to scale your business. Sorry, not sorry.

Often the best performing employee gets the shiny promotion with the fancy title and increase in their salary.

This is great, but a manager who is good at their job but does not have good people management skills is an ineffective manager will only cost you in the long run through multiple areas.

Tools for success:
- Provide them with the skills to manage people
- Educate them on internal policies and processes as well as how to follow them in practice
- Showcase the art and power of listening
- Remind them they will need to have difficult convos
- Open the conversation surrounding mental health

Failing to invest in line manager training will only stunt your growth as a business 🪵

Line managers are your key to success and you cannot expect them or your business to perform without the right training.

For an in-house line manager training lesson to educate and empower your team, give me a shout.

Simply put: Companies cannot afford to pay an infinite amount of money to their employees.

Why? Because they can't afford it and they will not make a profit themselves.

So how do you keep your team without increasing their salaries?

- Hire skillful managers who have the skills to manage people and get the job done.

- Value your team. Recognise the difference between feedback and validation.

- Create professional development opportunities.

- Create clear career advancement opportunities

- Have internal policies and processes. Follow them.

- Invest in your team's emotional, physical and financial well-being.

It would be great if we could all be paid the salary of our dreams, but this is not the reality.

If you don't know the answers to what candidates are looking for, I'll let you in on a secret... I have the answers.

How can I add value to your business?

Discrimination linked to her pregnancy 🤰

4 days after telling her employer that she was pregnant left the employee faced a redundancy process because the Company was struggling financially ❌

The court found the employer was unable to prove on the balance of probabilities that the decision was not related to the employee's newly announced pregnancy with her second child.

The employee was awarded £7,500 for discrimination on the grounds of pregnancy and injury to feelings 💰
