90%+ of the room said People & Talent is currently their biggest growth challenge.

That tells you something.

We had a brilliant turnout today for Why SME Growth Stalls – And How To Fix It - and some seriously honest conversations about what actually gets in the way of scaling an SME.

One point from Patrick Maloney really seemed to resonate: “5% is building the strategy. 95% is executing it.”

There was a lot of interest in how you maintain traction once the strategy is written - how you turn ambition into action, create accountability and keep the business moving forward.

Other big themes from the conversation:
🔹 Process matters.
The right processes create consistency, clarity and the foundations for growth.
🔹 Technology should facilitate, not complicate.
Used properly, technology can make processes more effective, create capacity and help businesses scale. Used badly, it can simply create more complexity.
🔹 Values matter as you grow.
You want to build a bigger business without losing the entrepreneurial spirit that made it successful in the first place.
🔹 And perhaps the biggest one… don’t become the bottleneck.

Founders and leaders need to create a business that can make decisions, solve problems and keep moving without everything coming back to them.

90 days. 5 years. One big picture.

It was great to have the Honest Accounting team in the Lead Talent HQ office for their 90-day meeting.

Great to spend the day with Sara Blane, Matthew Blane, Chay Mottley and Cerys Bradbury, getting stuck into the plans for the next 90 days - and, more importantly, the bigger picture.

‼️Here’s an uncomfortable question for business owners and MDs…

🙋‍♂️ Is your leadership team actually driving the business forward — or are they just getting very good at dealing with the problems you keep throwing at them? Because there’s a difference. I see it all the time.

✅ The business is growing.
✅ The numbers look okay.
✅ Everyone is incredibly busy.

And yet…

❌ Decisions take too long.
❌ The MD is still involved in everything.
❌ The same issues keep coming back.
❌ Senior people avoid difficult conversations.
❌ And the strategy document is gathering dust somewhere between the printer and the coffee machine.

That isn’t a strategy problem.
It’s a leadership problem.
And it’s one of the reasons I believe executive mentoring can be so valuable.
Not because senior leaders need someone to tell them how to run their business.

They don’t.

They need someone who has been around the block, isn't emotionally invested in the business and isn't afraid to ask:

❓“Why are you doing that?”
❓“What are you actually trying to achieve?”
❓“What are you avoiding?”

And occasionally…
❓“Have you considered that you might be the problem?”

That honest challenge can be incredibly valuable.
Because better leadership decisions lead to better ex*****on.
And better ex*****on is what ultimately improves business performance.
