Lithium-ion batteries pose a rising modern day fire risk, especially due to the increasing use of these re-chargeable batteries to power modern day devices such as electric vehicles (EVs), e-bikes, smartphones and power banks.

They can have devastating consequences due to thermal runaway, which makes them extremely flammable and release harmful toxic gases and are inherently difficult and challenging for fire and emergency services to extinguish. These types of fires are increasingly being reported across the country and fire services are tackling several Li-ion fires every day.

Today marks World Drowning Prevention Day. This is a global advocacy event recognised around the world, organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and highlights the tragic impact of drowning on families and communities, as well as the life-saving solutions that prevent it.

Drowning takes more than 300 000 lives a year - 30 every hour - and almost a quarter of them are children under five. Globally, it is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years.

More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

For the second year in a row, we’re encouraging as many people as possible to learn a lifesaving skill – the science-backed self-rescue technique of floating.

By practising how to float in a safe and supported environment, you can learn what floating looks and feels like for you, helping you to be better prepared for an emergency.

In April 2026, the BSI introduced a new standard for First Aid in the workplace. The BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026 highlights the importance of the accessibility of AEDs in the workplace and recommends that businesses and employers with 5 or more people onsite should have an AED available, clearly displayed, and accessible within two minutes from all areas of the workplace.

⚠️ URGENT SAFETY WARNING – WEST HADDLESEY LOCK⚠️

West Haddlesey Lock nr Selby

We are dealing with an extremely dangerous and ongoing situation where children are jumping into the lock from height, surrounded by hard stone walls, in an operational waterway managed by the Canal & River Trust.

✖️ This is not a swimming spot. This is not safe.✖️

Children have already been reported falling ill after entering the water. Please look out for symptoms of diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and flu-like symptoms if you suspect your child has been wild swimming and seek appropriate medical care/advice.

The lock walls are solid – a fall or collision could be fatal.

This is a working lock – water levels and conditions can change without warning.

❓ What are we doing?
Regular high visibility patrols of the area.
Several dispersal orders have been issued in this area.
Working alongside other agencies - The lock is privately owned by the Canal and Rivers Trust and anyone on site other than for legitimate use of the lock is trespassing.

❓ How can you help?
⛔ PLEASE – do NOT drop your children off in this area. Do not assume it's okay because other children are there.
If you see children at this location, please call 999 if there is immediate danger, or 101.

11 people have tragically lost their lives in water-related incidents across the country in recent weeks.
